SOS C4 Issue

A little back story. About a year and a half ago the new bride and i were back in town from our honeymoon and wanted to take the Bronco to Costco (about an hour away). Well we made it 2 blocks. I was hot rodding it hard. When 2nd gear hit there was a loud bang and the tranny acted like it was in neutral. I did a bit of trouble shooting and decided it need a new trans. Fast forward to today. Finally i have the new transmission that i ordered installed (a completely different one). Go to put it in gear and it is doing the exact same thing that the old one was ( every gear acts like neutral ). I did not replace the torque convert. That is the only explanation i can come up with. I have checked fluid level. I jacked the rear end and hand spun the drive shaft. It seems to be going into gear mechanicaly. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I would really hate to drop the transmission again to shotgun a torque coverter.

If the torque converter failed I have only seen them lock. They have no "stall" and grab as soon as you put it into gear and try to stall the engine. Your issue sounds exactly like what I had when my t-case was not completely locking into gear. I bet you can push the truck around in park - this would indicate the t-case is not engaged or it is broken.

I inspected the T-case when the trans was out. It appeared to go shift into gears ok doing it manually.

You should rule out all other possibilities before tearing it apart.

1) Oil level--A C4 with stock pan takes about 10 qts of fluid when it is completely empty. Read the dipstick level with the engine running.

2) Tcase out of gear--Easy to check. Jack up the rear end and see if the driveshaft doesn't turn when the trans is in PARK.

There are other possibilities like a missing or broken input shaft but you would need to remove the converter to check that out.

The fluid level is good. I checked about a thousand times last night. I wanted to make dang sure because I put an oversized pan on it and there is a tranny cooler.

I did jack up the rear tires last night and it seems to do what its supposed to mechanically.

So you jacked up the rear and put the transmission in park? Does the rear drive shaft turn by hand when you do this?

Had that exact same thing happen several years ago (when I ran an auto) turns out I had ripped the splines out of the output hub (where trans input shaft fits) in the torque converter.
Check that.

I called B&M tech line yesterday. The tech told me to check the torque converter, take off a cooler line and hand crank the motor, fluid should come out. Of course it doesn't.....

That's a new one to me, I've never heard of that.
If you lock the hubs and put it in 4x4, does it work?

There are other possibilities like a missing or broken input shaft but you would need to remove the converter to check that out.

There were 2 sizes of input shafts IIRC, will the smaller(24spline?) fit inside the hub of the larger convertor(26spline?) and not grab?

Hmm... havent thought of that one. I will check with the vendor that built the trans. I will have to double check once its out too i guess.
