Ok, so what is the best brand of aftermarket cooling fans nowadays?

I had a Spal In my current rig and it shit the bed after only 14k miles. That was last fall. We were in Myrtle Beach on a road trip, 500 miles from home, so I shoehorned an AutoZone special in there to get home. I'd prefer to run a Taurus fan or another oem but space is very limited. Is Spal no good, or do think I just got a bum one?

I'd prefer to keep it electric. I'm running a mechanical diesel so it's hard to keep it up to temp in colder weather with a mechanical fan.

I think Spal is probably one of the best. I don’t have as many miles as you, but mine has worked great for the last 19 years.

For OEM, as you know, the Taurus has been the go-to for many years, but I imagine those would be pretty hard to find in junkyards nowadays. It will be interesting to see the responses here.

There a several brushless fans out there now that are really good, Spal makes one, but there are others. I’m with you on the OEM stuff. I too am electric fan dependent and it’s always one of my concerns.

Brushless DC is what makes the power these days. Even the OEM fans are running them for most things now. They do require a controller, to convert the DC to AC power. technically they are 3-phase AC motors. They are called Brushless DC because as an electrical engineering design for how to work it into a circuit you treat it as a brushless DC motor. Which has different requirements (electrical noise) from a brushed motor. Think computers that are touchy about electrical noise on the power buss.

The nice part about the controllers is you get a way to control fan speed. Something besides all or nothing, or maybe low and high. They also move more air for a given amount of wattage, they are more efficient. No brushes to wear out, the only wear item is the bearings.

There is someone here running a nice brushless motor. I have been trying to remember what it is? I think it is a 3-letter acronym name. I just can't remember then letters.

Thanks for the replies. That volvo one looks interesting, hadn't seen those before. As was mentioned though, it's getting harder to find the junkyard stuff anymore. It sounds like I have go down the rabbit hole on brushless fan research!

Does that cool as good as the taurus fans? Waiting for my Taurus to go out, dang thing won’t die from even rubbing the water pump pulley lol
I can't say for sure, since I haven't run or seen the Taurus fan run. I have read that they cool about the same (found the volvo fans researching the Taurus fans). It's been very reliable for me, I've had it for about 8 years and have only had to replace the volvo relay pack this year with an OEM replacement. The one I installed originally wasused from the JY. The fan held 180* cruising around El Paso TX at 110* and would only climb to maybe 190 going up a steep grade for an mile or so. I know a lot of folks don't like electric fans on this site, but I've had good results with this one. It also comes with a shroud that's about the perfect size for the EB Core.

Couple pics of an 04 maybe06 jeep liberty2 speed fan assembly with trimming to gain the most clearence, just under 4 inches,, using a BMW fan91/99c temp switch and two relays, it gets to about 205 then the fan cycles goes down to about 180 ish , at idle the fan is off more then on and have 192 thermostat ive never had high speed kick in but this will be its first summer so well see,, I also wired with two switches so can be auto , off or on high speed,, the shroud foot print matches the core perfect ,, i grabbed it from customers.vehicle so lasted 20 years once I made it fit I got a new motor for it ..
