I have that cooler and mounted it on the underside under the drivers seat. Not the best place but with the fan it does work well for me.

Yeah, that’s where I’m trying to put it now but even less space with my retracting power steps.

And @rcmbronc you have the race huge one or the regular? Which trans?

I’ve got mine mounted under my driver’s seat as also. I don’t have an aux gas tank, so it fits in there. I mounted to my rock ski’s so I don’t feel it when it turns on.

Got the cooler mounted today. Man, it was a tight fit, not much room for air between the size of this cooler and my steps there but since it was all fresh air, I figured I had to try.

I did not spend time making my lines pretty or doing the wiring exactly how I wanted all in case it would be moving again.

Still need more testing but it took a long time for the temp to hit 150° and it did eventually hit 189° a couple times and each time came back down a few degrees.

So far so good.

I did the lines and wiring quickly yesterday just to test and see if it was worth the effort of doing it right.

Since it seemed to be an improvement, I redid my lines and wiring today.

The hard lines didn’t work so well here, vibrating on the eStopp unit so went all steel braided ptfe.

I take it all back. Seems like it’s an improvement with short stints of hard driving but constant freeway driving uphill 50-60 mph it will not cool—worse than before.

Tough to swallow all that work and start over with finding a new spot. Might have to try up front but just don’t know.

Seems my last and only option is figuring a way to mount this up front.

I’ll have to get a different ps cooler and get it out of the way and figure out mounting. Also might just use rubber trans cooling hose so I can just test.

Man, what a pita this has been! I swear it was fine at one point, did I imagine that?

The good rubber AFT/PS cooler hose isn't any less expensive than the the race car stuff. I know that @Yeller and @lars have both posted their coolers of choice in the past. I seem to recall that one of them is quite wide and not terribly tall if that helps with fitment any.
If anything, it seems like that stacked plate with fins type of coolers are getting both more common and are offered in a larger range of sizes than in the past.

This may be a crazy suggestion, but how much do you love that high stall TC? As much work as you’ve done working the heat, you could have pulled AOD and swapped the TC.

@ntsqd i mean about the time it takes to make new lines

@ksagis im not changing TCs. It’s perfect for my engine and trans, I love how it drives and was custom made for my specs.

Going to try first moving it so it has more air and might try another fan as a last resort. This SPAL fan on it is 625 and found me one that’s 839 cfm that should work better.

If those don’t work make this work I’ll prob just give up and change to a 4r70w.

I think it was better in the previous location while driving on the freeway.

So tired of this.

I suspect, based on decades of observing this sort of thing, that until you do go to a lower stall converter that you're always going to be fighting this. I know that's not what you want to hear. The only way that I see it working at all is to use a cooler as big or bigger than the PSD 6.0 trans cooler (i.e. an A/C condenser sized trans cooler) in front of the radiator. Maybe it will work then. I can recall guys with higher than stock stall converters running at least two, sometimes three coolers in series and it was always an issue even then.

You're right, that is not what I want to hear but it is what I'm fearing.

I'm going to try moving this cooler to one more spot and if it doesn't work I might add a stacked plate cooler in front and see if the two together can do it. I'm just shocked this race cooler that claims 130,000 btu/hr of cooling hasn't been able to cool this thing.

I checked and I have enough trans cooler hose to mount it somewhere to test and I'd love to do that test up front but not the easiest mounting and my PS cooler in the way so not sure yet. I think I need to find a way.

I'll bet that when really slipping the converter is converting way more than 51HP into heat. Would not surprise me if at peak it isn't 4 times that.

Yeah, going uphill unless I'm super light on the throttle and hold at 50 mph in 3rd, the heat gets too hot. Sadly, I think it cooled much better in the spot by the muffler than where it is now. I'm tempted to just put it back there and do the fan upgrade but I'm curious what access to cooler air will do.

Just wish it were easier to move around and test spots.

I removed the cooler...again...and moved it around to different spots trying to figure out what to do.

I really don't like it anywhere. It's fine up front, but I hated my trans cooling lines running up front on the initial build and it got cooler having them out of the engine compartment. I do think the best spot would be up front but this thing is way too large and I don't want to get a different cooler after all I've been through.

So, decided to mount it back to the previous position above the differential and order a new fan. This Spal fan on it is rated at 625 cfm and really just feels "ok". There is a 9" fan from Zirgo that claims 839 cfm that must be at least a little better. After that if I want more, I'll make a duct for fresh air.

And then worst case scenario that none of this works I can add a secondary stacked plate cooler up front.

That's my plan and I'm sticking to it. 🤞🤞🤞

Can you do an "overkill" test? All I'm thinking is if you can temporarily mount this race car cooler in front of your grill then you will know 100% what you need to do next... maybe... :) I mean this would be the best test for sq in of cooling needed.

I ran two coolers for a while with my 4r behind my 418. One mounted under the rad with a Spal fan, similar to where Baja Broncos mounted theirs and the other was a SD cooler in front of the rad. Cooled great

Well, and that's what I was going to do but this cooler is so big and heavy that after test fitting all over, I just thought, "what's the point?". Routing the lines to the front is a pain, I have to remove my exhaust to get to the fittings on the side of the trans, and I really don't want my cooler mounted there....

I got to 241° in the spot under the driver's seat the other day but I think I only got to 214° in the spot by the muffler (I don't remember for sure now). Will have to do the same drive I did the other day to compare and I can now take temp gun measurements the right way.

I think this spot is going to work if I can just figure out what it wants. I can always add ram air to this cooler and as a last resort, I can always add a second smaller cooler up front if nothing else works.

Haven’t done my freeway test yet, but I thought about my lines a little more when making them this time and made the line on the muffler side turn away right away and then also put a shield on it to test.

Old routing close to muffler:

New routing away and shielded:

Seemed to be about a 10° drop on my around town drive. Not sure if I’m going to test freeway before h the renew fan comes Sunday but I prob should.
