I have been reading, re-reading, cutting and pasting, bookmarking and referencing a ton of material about the Holley and the Explorer. The Explorer is awd, dont know if that helps, hurts or is irrelevent to my cause.

For the Holley system:
Motor
Front serpentine setup
Transmission.

Because the Holley comes with its own harness, I can skip keeping the harness and computer.

I believe the Hooley is manifold air pressure, where the Explorer is Mass air flow.

Im not interested in the distributor "look" so I believe I need to tell the Hooley people I want coil on plug.

I believe the EGR gets bypassed with Hooley, although I will run catalytic converters.

Are there any wiring harness pieces I need to keep to splice or anything?

Before I have the explorer carcass hauled off, i just want to grab all needed things.

The holley kit uses many GM sensors, IAC, TPS and coolant temp. Coolant temp is easy that will go right into your manifold; the IAC and TPS will require adapters which can be found here:
https://accufabracing.com/product/5-0l-mustang-tps-adapter-late-gm/

https://accufabracing.com/product/idle-air-control-adapter-early-late-gm/

As for the explorer stuff, keep the intakes, fuel injectors/rails, throttle body and also the crankshaft position sensor. The holley wont use this sensor, but that is also the pointer for your harmonic balancer.

Keep the connectors for the transmission. The alternator plug is easy enough to get a replacement if you don't keep the one from the Explorer.

The connectors... As I am disassembling, we are finding the plastic clips are very brittle. I guess, 30 years old, AZ heat and thousands of heat cycles will do that.

Can I replace the connectors on injectors?

FWIW the connectors on modern vehicles can be just as bad or worse ,, very brittle especially when buried under all these engine covers ,,

8.8 rear end, Jeep guys seem to want those...

Sell the harness, as complete as you can. ECU should be worth about $45, going rate at the Idaho wreaking yards

Someone will take the 8.8 rear, Shorten the long side axle tube get another passenger side axle for it and it will fit under a lot of older vehicles. Also the people using crown vic frontend swaps like the explorer 8.8.

If you maniacs did this in the wrecking yard, in the dirt, with hand tools, you are nuts.

Admittedly I have never done this before.

I pulled the front dress off an Explorer in the yonke a few weeks ago with the fenders and front end removed like yours - easiest pull ever!

Why do they switch between metric and standard.
Legacy engineering vs. new design.
If the part has always been standard, for interchangeability, and to avoid having to do new engineering and testing, it stays standard.
But if the part is new, all the new stuff is metric. Vistion comes out with a new A/C compressor design, it is for the world market, it is metric. Ford may get exclusive use of the part, but it is based on a metric design by a global company.

getting the exhaust out is most of the battle. Remove the starter, spin the motor over by hand and remove the 4 torque converter nuts from inside the starter hole. Remove the driveshafts and tcase, drop the transmission crossmember around where the torsion bars meet the frame, should be 4 bolts/nuts vertically and 2 horizontally that go through sleeves in the crossmember, drop the crossmember, with the transmission and engine leaned back, you can then access the bellhousing bolts a little easier. Drop the trans and the motor should pull out with little to no effort after this. This is a general summary, there will be wiring, clips, shift linkage etc that needs to removed through each step.
