Did a bunch of work and testing last night and still the same result. It must be the starter. New dedicated ground, counted flexplate teeth and inspected them for wear. New clamp style battery cables. Meter tested everything. Starter is getting 12v. I have a higher quality starter coming...

You're right. Its worth going back over and re testing everything. I am going to investigate the ground, voltage, etc. Run an individual ground for the starter. Im also running post style connections instead of the clamp, I may switch those as well.

Its a frame off restoration. New starter was removed because I figured it was defective. Same symptoms with new one

Starter is new. Im thinking I may have the wrong belhousing flexplate combo. But if that was wrong, why would it only not work sometimes? Currently have 164T flexplate in a rebuilt C4 but I am unsure now if the bell is for a 157T

Head scratcher here. This truck usually starts fine, but sometimes when turning over it seems the starter isn’t catching the flex plate. All the parts are new and if you bump it a few times it will eventually start. Voltage and ground is good

So Ive got a zero mile 97 explorer gt40P motor, bronco timing cover to run it with all the stock accessories. Using a toms 50oz balancer with the 3 sets of timing marks. Couple questions. Is the firing order different than the earlier 302? And which set of timing marks should I be using...

So I’m in the middle of finishing up a long block from a 98 explorer. It’s going with a C4 transmission and everything else around it is factory parts. Any idea what I will need for a torque converter? Also, curious what you guys used for a flexplate.

Another one for those following. Oil Pickup tube the same as the bronco 302 on this motor? Or do I need the specific one for this year? I imagine it just differs due to pan design?

Running sanderson headers on this motor swap with GT40P heads. Am I needing to run certain plug wires?

I got the motor for a good price and I dont love the look of the explorer front dress. Truck is being built to sell, so Id like to keep it as simple as possible, and just run the old style timing cover. So I can use most of the accessories I currently have
