I could be wrong but I think the wh 1" bl are a hard urethane not solid plastic so you're still getting a little cushion. Nowadays most replacement bushings are also urethane unless you specify rubber. Urethane stiffens things up a bit and are longer life than rubber.

With the bronco not running, have a buddy turn the wheel back and forth while you look at the components and see where the play is. If you need a drag link make sure it's for a 66 or the pita hole will be too small.

If it's over full did you try pushing down lid and turning key? As mine have gotten older I have to wiggle the lid up and down and find the spot where the key will turn.
