Hey all you guys and gals out there. We purchased a 1966 U13 (mid-October 1965 build date) in March 2020. I had been planning on doing a build thread for at least 6 months now, but for some reason or another I usually got distracted before finishing the first post.

That being said, I'm going to make individual posts for each of the steps we've gone through along the way to this point, which will give a little bit more thorough insight into what we have done so far and discuss what some of our struggles have been along the way.

This is my 3rd Bronco, but 1st Early Bronco. My first Bronco was a 96, 2nd was a 1990 Eddie Bauer (my current daily), and I've always had Fords before. First car was a (purple!) Ford Probe, and I have also a had 1994 and 2008 F-150.

I didn't really turn my first wrench until 2015, when I learned how to change the brakes on my '08 F-150. Since then, I've really enjoyed the process of challenging myself to think through how to repair my vehicles. I am still a ways off from being able to fabricate, but I'm hoping that's a skill I'll pick up along the way as well. Thankfully, there are plenty of resources for someone a bit "mechanically disinclined" like me to learn along the way. I have a family member who was willing to help with the whole build, so I have been fortunate enough to be able to work with him along the way.

The goal is to have the 66 ready for 2021 Super Cel this April. I drove my 90 down to Super Cel in October. From Minnesota, it was about 3300 miles round trip, but it was worth it. My wife and I really enjoyed meeting other Bronco addicts and made a few friends while we were there. It was amazing seeing so many Broncos in one place and ogling over them after only seeing pictures on the interwebs.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to stop by and let me know if you have any questions or wanna chat about anything!

It's definitely never too late to learn... Look forward to seeing your progress

Here are the photos! Thanks for the link to the contributor page. I plan on sticking around for a few generations ;D , so I am happy to give back!

Here are some pictures of the Bronco the day I bought it, and how it looked once we got it into the shop and cleaned up pre-teardown. I was really happy to see that a lot of original '66 parts were still intact. The t case shifter, seats, original roadster inserts, radiator, bumpers, lockout hubs, tailgate, etc.

At this point, our plan was to strip down the paint and crud and develop a game plan for the body and preserve as many original parts as we could.

Does anybody know if this top appears to be an original U13 soft top?

The soft top does not look original. The side windows are larger and there is a seam at rear of the window that is not found on originals.

Post-teardown

Here is how the Bronco sat after we tore off the sheet metal. I know it didn't look like it, but a lot of the sheet metal from underneath was really badly rusted. A lot of the inner parts were toast, also.

We toredown the frame and sandblasted it, grinded down some rough spots, and sent it off for powdercoating. The frame had a couple of body mounts that were rusted through and had gaping holes, so we welded in new washers to reinforce it and make the hole sizes correct.

We went with a 2.5" Wild Horses 4x4 lift, with the (hopefully) appropriately valved shocks to account for the lighter weight of the Roadster. We opted for the blue shock boot cover option, which I think turned out really nice. We had to do some finnagling to get the boot covers to fit correctly.

We are keeping the entire drivetrain stock throughout, which has presented some issues I will address later. The 9 inch and D30 appear to be in great shape. Replacing all the seals, bearings, etc. We sandblasted most of the drivetrain components and painted them Ford blue.

Take care, enjoy the progress photos. I'm heading up North for the weekend. Enjoy Bronco'ing, everyone!

Thank you for the feedback! Can you tell if the door inserts appear to be original?
