302 flywheel on a 1996 351w?

Well, finally got around to the engine swap and I have a quick question.
My parts engine is a 1974 302. I was planning on re-using the flywheel and the harmonic balancer on the 351w, but my mechanic is telling me that the 302 balancer isn't fitting on the 351w. I can by another balancer, but which one?
I have a 28oz balancer in my garage and I'm thinking I can use that, but I'm not sure if it's the same weight as the 1974 flywheel.
Anyone know? Is the 1974 302 flywheel 28oz?

thanks,
-H

I believe all 351w are 50oz. All pre HO 302's are 28oz. When ford switched the 302 to the 351w firing order and started calling it an HO, they switched the 302 to 50oz as well. But to my knowledge the 351w was always a 50oz. So you would not be able to run the 28oz balancer or 28oz flywheel on the 351w. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I am in the process of building a 1996 351w and purchased a new flywheel for the '96 from NAPA for less than $50 and the clutch for my '73 bolted right up. As far as the balancer I reused the one that was on the '96 351w. But pretty sure that they are 50oz

Hmm...the one I ordered from Summit says 28oz and will fit the 96 351w. But if Napa has a flywheel that cheap, that's good to know.

351w are all 28 oz. 302 are all 28oz until they went 5.0. And a 302 harmonic will indeed slide right on a 351w crank. Wether it's a 28 or 50 oz.

All 351W are 28oz, All 289/302 were 28oz until the early 80's. In the 80's they started putting 50oz flex-plates on the 302.

Whatch my video, look at the part numbers. If the flywheel came off a 1974 302 then its 28oz.

AOD and C4 use the same flexplate offset. C6 and E4OD use the same offset.

What I used on my 96 351W

Flywheel from Jegs
F5TZ-7007-AD F/WHEEL 67-87 SBF 164T 28oz $100.99

Clutch Kit from RockAuto
1974 FORD BRONCO 5.0L 302cid V8
LUK 07120 (07-120) Clutch Kit $ 96.79
Diaphragm pressure plate not the 3 fingers.

Your mechanic is wrong. Use the old 302 parts. They will work.

He is probably confused because late model 302 and 351 are not compatible.

The only thing that could be different are the timing marks. That can be fixed by swapping timing pointers. Unless there is more to the story here like a switch to serp belt drive or something.

There's a lot bad information out there. First all 351-5.8 Windsors have a 28oz. imbalance. The 302-5.0 went from 28oz. to 50 oz. in '82. Ford changed the designation from 302 to 5.0 in 1975 Mustang IIs, but the name was all that changed. The '75-'77 Broncos kept the 302 designation. The hydraulic roller cam came in '85 Mustangs and EFI came in '86. A late '70s Mustang II 5.0 is identical to earlier 302s ie. no EFI, roller cam, or 50 oz. imbalance. It's still a 5.0. The common misinformation refers to these real 5.0s, as 302s. For the sake of new owners of Ford small blocks we need to make an effort to be accurate in what we call these engines. The year of manufacture is a necessity in both questions and answers.
