302 Windsor Jr head install questions

Hey All-

I got my heads back and painted, ready to put these puppies back on.

I know the torque settings are Upper Row 80 ft. lbs. Lower Row 70 ft. lbs and that i need to use a sealer on all the bolts as some of them go into water.

what type of sealant? just a hi-temp rtv?

What is the tightening sequence for the J/R heads on a 302?

The gasket goes on without any sealers or anything (or at least that is what i remember the engine builder told me) and I know just to make sure they are on correctly.

Any other hints or advice?

I have always used ARP teflon sealer for head bolts.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ARP-100-9904/

Getting a tube of ARP assembly lube for all of the other bolts is not a bad idea either....

Head gasket goes on dry, and you should torque the bolts down in at least 2 stages starting in the middle and cris-crossing as you move to the ends.

thanks guys, more stupid questions because i don't remember...

Short bolts on the upper row and long bolts on the lower?

How do I know which is driver's side head and vice versa?

Told you it was stupid ;D

Ditto on the ARP stuff.

I use it on ALL head/intake/front cover bolts. Even if they don't go into water. Torque values change with each different lube/sealer you use.

I torque all the head bolts the same ft lbs.

Been doing this for many years with the same excellent results.

Lower head bolts are short.

Heads fit either side.

As said, the heads are (or should be) interchangeable. But I've seen some heads with only one end having threaded holes for the accessories, so check that at least. More than likely, your heads are fully threaded on both ends, but it never hurts to check.
I've heard of people using the spray-on Copper gasket too, but I've always used the individual manufacturers recommendations on head gaskets. And if yours say to put them on dry, that's what I'd do.

Unless your gaskets have clear "Front" or "Rear" markings, double and triple check that all of your coolant openings line up properly with the passages on the block.

got my heads on, everything went smoothly which is rare so i am excited. Is there anything i can spray onto the heads to keep them from rusting overnight? i live so close to the ocean, it only takes one humid night...

WD40 or similar product. Just make sure you clean off any gasket surfaces you may have sprayed before installing.
