Driven Auto Parts quoted me $75 + $5 shipping via USPS for the modified pulley to adapt a Bronco balancer to the Explorer front dress and it is in stock ready to ship

Damper Dudes has multiple options for the Explorer balancer.
1. $50 to rebalance
2. $109 to rebuild and rebalance
3. $171 for a new 28oz

Shipping is $15 each way via UPS and their turn around time is 1 day.

I am leaning toward the pulley only because obtaining a rebalanced / modified Explorer balancer is going to be difficult should something happen and I need a spare. Plus, a spare will cost more $.

Using the pulley gives me much more flexibility to replace the Bronco balancer and swap the pulley.

BC Broncos is at $112 for the 351 lower to Mustang upper adapter.

Still no thoughts on the 4R70W shift kit?

Just talked with Kevin @ Baumann. They have shift kids for the 4R70W but he mentions that unless I am looking at a full throttle application, I will have sufficient line pressure to continue without a shift kit.

ok chuzie...from what i can see without removing heads. peeking threw spark plug hole...doesnt look like stock deep dish pistons-might be TRW flat tops with valve reliefs cut in them-nice.

as for the heads...i can see the numbers for the heads with intake removed, D7OE DC the other numbers under the valve cover were 77 and 7C16. ill post pics in a sec

So decent pistons and stock cruddy heads....

Thanks for looking at it for me bro. Good to know what I am working with.

Again, the theme of ultra budget here means the heads stay as is until I can save some $$$ for something else.

With those heads though, I doubt going to the trouble of port matching the lower intake would do any bit of good or rather not have any gain near worth the effort.

Anyone heave an Edelbrock system they want to donate???

Also watch out for the stamped in or recessed place on the flexplate the 4r70w torque converter will not fit correctly in the recessed place on some c4 flexplates even though the 4 studs will line up.

I'm confused now. Do you have a pic or diagram to reference so I can get a better idea of what you are talking about?

I think he's saying that your torque converter will bolt on BUT, it the TC isn't recessed enough and it will bottom out before the bolts are snugged up. That's the problem I had.

I ordered what was supposed to be the one that fit (everybody said it would) but ended up having to order a different one that was recessed more....I tend to .030" difference? PM me if you'd like a pic or two of how you can measure the differences btw the two...

Good luck, you'll really like the tranny.

Yes nvrstuk that is correct also the diameter of the recess in the flexplate needs to be correct for the 4R70W torque conv. I had a hard time finding a cheap 0 balance flexplate going with a Scat flexplate it was about 48.00

DeepWoods, can you give me the distributor and manufacturer for that zero balance flexplate?

My stroker block is getting machined and I'm hunting parts for it...

Sure appreciate it.

TIA

I'm looking for my 4r70W/KluneV/Atlas writeup now on another list for chuzie....

Update-
Crap, out of hundreds of build threads that have been saved over the past two years on a local Bronco list, ONLY my thread from the summer of 2011 is now not accessible. The Moderator has no idea why, just can't be accessed. Sorry I can't give you the specific measurement.

I can tell you this, out of several flex plates listed, you need to ask the vendor you're buying it from, for the one that is recessed more -- from the crank mounting surface to the TC mounting surface.

Good luck

From what I can dig up around the web (see this document), looks like D7OE DC heads had 67.50cc chambers and are native to the 302 which, at the time, was rated at 122Hp.

Now I also know that there were better and worse heads during those years. Some went up to 76.90cc. I bet with the flat top pistons and the somewhat smaller chamber, it won't be to bad although the 57.25cc chambers would have been SWEET!

Well, the E40D flexplate I was told would work on my 4R70W didn't... I bought it, bolted it on, slid the trans in place and the billet torque converter wouldn't bolt on. about .060" or so from being able to bolt up tight.... once my build thread gets unlocked, I will post it up.

If I forget or it's been more than a week or two, pm me and I'll dig thru my receipt folder/box/crate (getting bigger every decade) and find the part # for ya. I would think it would be more helpful to have both, the actual measurement you need (then you won't be screwed waiting if you happen to get the wrong one) and the part #.

You don't have a stock converter? Was it a 5.8 engine both yours and the model you bought the flex plate for? I'm not going to run the auto trans any more but want to follow this post to see what does work with the set up posted.

Thanks for the effort, but I think I am just going to have to bite the bullet and rebalance or make a purchase of a 28oz AOD flexplate. Plan on playing musical engines next week while I am in town. Otherwise, it won't get done until April.

I will start searching for one and post up when I find it. Nonetheless, if you can find the receipt that would be great as well as the measurement info from the build thread to clear up future questions about the C4 flexplate.

Thx.
Mike
