I just got back from my local machine shop with my explorer harmonic balancer and just about choked on the thing when they quoted me min $250 to rebalance it to 28 oz. So now I am trying to decide if it would be better to go with the pulley from Driven and an aftermarket balancer or just to bite the bullet and get it done. I really would like some opinions on this from those who have done it. Pics would be great too of Randy's as I have yet to see one all mounted up. Thanks.

Damper dudes charge like $100 to rebalance it.

Your local machine shop is nuts. I know a local guy that had one done for $50.

Thanks for the replies and pics. I checked with both shops here and they are charging about the same (they have watched too many episodes of American hot Rod). I got a reply from Damper Dudes already and it is $50 to rebalance it or $109.69 to balance and rebuild. WTF is done in rebuilding one of these stupid things? It looks like a piece of cast iron that is machined. I am looking into shipping to see which way is most econimical since it appears that both the original 5.0 and the Driven pulley system are about equal. Thanks for the help.

There is usually a piece of rubber between the inner hub and the outer balance ring. Your existing one is probably fine if you don't see a bunch of deterioration.

There is no rubber ring on the explorer balancer. It's one solid piece of steel.

Couldn't remember... So no need to 'rebuild' - it would probably be rust removal and a fresh coat of paint.

BTW - those flat rate boxes from USPS are a good deal if you can fit it in one.

$250 is more than I paid to have my entire motor balanced to 50oz so that I could use a stock Explorer dampener.
