I used the factory radiator from a early 90s explorer cause they're narrower with great results 10 years now with the explorer pump, hoses, fan, and shroud.
With a crossflow radiator you would also have to move the upper to the other side as well, so it would cross flow through the core.
Or get really fancy and make a dual pass. In this case there are 3 radiator tanks, 2 small ones on one side (in and out) and a transition tank on the other side. This is often done with an internal wall so the 2 tanks are in one shell, just a wall dividing separating the hot and cold water.
