4R70W crossmember use upper mounts?

I noticed on the 4R70W there are some (what look like) mounts on the top of transmission itself (not the tailhousing)

can these be used to mount the transmission? Are they strong enough? Or should a cross member always go under the transmission? I have a 3" body lift so I think I could make a crossmember that sits on top of the framerails and then "hang" the tranny from that. Seems like it might be easier than making a crossmember with bends to clear the front driveshaft. It would be up and out of the way completely.

i know they typically mount below the tail shaft housing but you have to get creative with the crossmount to make sure the front driveshaft clears. I was wondering if I could use those 2 holes on the top of the transmission instead since that would be out of the way of the front driveshaft.

I think those 2 holes are there for mounting in a jig for machine work during production. They look a little light for a mount. I also like an under the trans crossmember so if the fasteners of insulator fails the transmission is still captive and not falling to the ground.

yeah, i guess the possibility of broken fasteners and a dropping transmissions alone is good enough reason to not use those.

haven't decided if I want to try to use BC's ZF crossmember or just make my own. I kinda have a feeling the BC crossmember will be in the way of the front driveshaft with the Atlas.

The ZF transmission crossmember won't work. I've tried. I could be made to work, but with the fabrication needed, it is easier and cheaper just to fab one up.

awesome, good to know, thanks! Chuck was really cool and offered to let me return it if it didn't work but it's good to not waste the time and shipping.

now i'm trying to figure out if I want to flat clock it and notch the frame or just leave it hanging down like the dana 20. decisions decisions.

So I take it that from your research the Atlas 4 speed requires notching frame depending on how high you clock it? If thats the case then maybe a StaK 3 speed mini could be a via alternative. Here's mine.

Are you keeping it a 2WD? I see you have no transfer case adapter mounted to the back of your trans.

From the pics above you can see that is where it is best to mount the crossmember, but if you are keeping it 2WD then you will need to make a crossmember like a 2WD trans has.
