4R70W + Atlas II questions: overall length, shifter, crossmember and more

I have fixed that whole shift cable comes in from the back frome under the tcase and parallel to the pan waiting to get smashed or create interference issues with the DS when running a 6r. Mine comes in from the front now.
If you are looking at the drivers side of the trans picture the cable coming in from the front at a 45deg angle and the cable housing heading straight up towards the top of the bellhousing to the block/bellhousing part line. Then circling back to the shifter. It's totally up and out of the way. Sounds clunkly with a big loop etc but its not.

You are assuming quite alot there...
Lets me grab a pic of the crossmember. I bought a good used running tranny from a local here at CB.com, he had quite a bit of power ful 351w and was using the stock torque converter. I believe Spareparts another CB member told me he was running the stock converter as well but this was behind a stock 5.0 explorer. Anyway, I am won't putting anywhere near your 408 in HP with my mild 90's modeled 351w and plan on using the same stock converter.
The transmember also came from the same guy and it's a modified tubular style BC broncos crossmember. It looks just like the same one I used on my ZF tranny only with a taller mount.

atlas 3.0-used 4R70W- clocking ring/spacer on the 3.0 and the modified BC crossmember.
I am not sold on the modified crossmember but I know he was using and claimed to have no issues. He ended up yanking everything and doing a coyote swap.
Yay! Super helpful, thanks Ben! I won't be using the clocking ring as I'm trying to keep my driveline as short as possible, which means it will still be at least as long as it is now (NV4500 + Atlas). But otherwise the same.

No idea on new converter that isn't stock. Might ask him (Silver Fox, can't remember his name).

Hopefully somebody can chime in. Problem with rebuilt stuff is.... warranteed for life but who cares!!! It's the 12hrs of R&R that is the hard part, not the $400 part!

Wouldn't a new converter for an AOD/AODE work?, assuming that they are even available.

Actually answering my own question. Yes they are the same as the 4r70w.
I would try someone like TCI, they make torque converters for everything race related and I believe they are all new.

Might see if they have something off the shelf or could build one?

Can anyone else weigh in with a photo or two? If I copy a design I promise to give credit!

After rooting around on the internet and searching here, it seems that if using a 4R70W/Atlas combo you are on your own for a crossmember, especially since even crossmembers for other applications are out of stock everywhere. Can anyone else weigh in with a photo or two? If I copy a design I promise to give credit!
To be honest I personally like the modified stock mount. Seems easy, looks relatively stock and strong enough. not sure how it works with the Atlas though.

I missed that one, thanks Ben. My transmission is an AWD version, so I'm assuming the transmission mount will be some variant of an OEM Explorer mount, but the stock crossmember could still be made to work. If only I still had mine...

And meanwhile I just discovered that Advance Adapters has several Bronco-specific crossmembers in their catalog. I'm not at all opposed to building one from scratch, but if I can modify an off-the-shelf part I'm thinking it may be easier, since the frame attachments will already be there. Need to get under my Bronco to measure. Which won't be today, it just topped 100° again, and I'm a sissy about heat. Paul, if you see this, I noticed that WH sells AA's 6R80 mount. What think you about adapting it?

Do those stock type crossmembers all mount UNDER the front double carden output shaft on the Atlas? That's what didn't like.

I built mine to go over the top of the double carden joint. Easy access and ground clearance.

Lars, if you want to go this route I might have one to send you. Least I could do for all your help over the years!

A solution to the crossmember is to use a flanged CV that bolts from the front, then not fighting those bastard bolts on the back. I've started doing that with my builds. just make service so much simpler. There's a reason the OEM's have gone to flanges, its simpler/faster production.

That's an interesting option. Guess I should look to see if AA offers a flange option for the outputs.

In any case what I may wind up doing is simply getting the transmission in, then using my current AA NV4500 crossmember to hold things in place while I mock up something new. But I'm getting ahead of myself, the 4R is still a filthy mess sitting on a furniture dolly in my hangar. A loooonnngg way from being ready to install.

I'm flanged now with 1350's. Agreed it does make access & repair easier!

Could one y’all post a pic of said flange ? I’m curious to what it looks like and if it’s just for auto transmission applications.

Will work with most any 32 spline output that uses a retaining bolt or nut.

Thanks for the pic and information. Looks like I get to go “sleuth” on my 77…unless the 32 spline output shaft was not a factory install in 77.

Nvrstuk, so most converters run in the 1,600 to 1,800 stall, your running 2,000 or more and thats with the 460?
