Can't figure out why the 2 wd high range is not working. Stock Dana 20, C4, 351 W. Wheels turn in 4 high range and 4 low range, but not in 2 high range. Put the JB Fab adjustable detent kit in. Here is the shifter in 2 H 1721431881247.jpeg and the rods in 2 H 1721432002769.jpeg

Here is the shifter in 4 H 1721432143129.jpeg and the rods in 4 H 1721432254122.jpeg The shifter seems to fully engage at a detent, but the rear drive shaft does not turn. The horse is up on jackstands with the wheels off the ground. Any ideas? As you can probably see, getting at the detent adjusters or the rods will not be easy. Thanks for any and all input. Two possible things:

1- The small slot is not allowing the shifter handle to move as far as it needs to. You could tell by dropping the shifter out and shifting the case manually...

2-Could be too much spring pressure on the detent balls for a stock "J" type shifter to work smoothly.
Try This and let me know if it helped? back off the detents until the shifter feels better. If it feels better but you can't feel the detents, tighten them 1/4 turn at a time until you do

Feel free to call me

Thank you for the response JB, much appreciated! I am pretty sure I kept the instructions for the detent kit, but, could not track it down yesterday. Are there instructions available on line? Also, is there a simple way to access the detents without cutting holes or dropping the case? Again, thank you very much.

Checked in with Joel (Bronco parts seller extraordainare) again this morning. He had a D 20 J-shift out on a cart. We verified that the rod position pictured above for 2 H was the same on his Tcase as on mine. Looks like I may be cutting some tunnel sheet metal. Heck. Didn't really need more to do, but....

The instructions would be:
Back off the detents until the shifter feels better. If it feels better but you can't feel the detents, tighten them 1/4 turn at a time until you do.

Accessing the detents is a PITA in most cases.. body lift helps but I've had to remove the crossmember and lower the T-case.

Curious to see what you find out with the detents. I assebled mine a while back and it shifts super hard. I may have a similar issue but T-shift with one handle though.

D20 input gear was put on backwards. The dogs to engage the rear output shaft are only on one side of the gear.

So did your transfer case get rebuilt at some point Howard? Is that earlier in your build thread?

Paul, good question. Truth is, in a 13 year build, I don't even remember where the TC came from. Makin' some slow progress tho. I guess after sayin' 13 year build, slow progress is redundant. Any how, I called Jon at JB Fab. Super nice guy, super helpful. So far, the bad news is that I had to cut access holes in the tranny hump. Nearly broke my heart, but.... Per Jon's counsel in this thread, I pulled the J shifter. Still could not get 4 hi, called Jon. Per his counsel, pulled the TC inspection cover this morning. I've got the front axle shift bars workin' fine now. Rear axle shift bar is tomorrow. Thank you Jon, your help is much appreciated. And thanks Paul for asking. My TC woes that took me down a rabbit hole are a part of the 13 year story. Gotta say tho, the internals of a TC are pretty interesting. Makes me really respect the true grease n grimers here who get really down and dirty!

PS Had the tranny rebuilt 2014 $835, don't remember about the TC

I've prolly had that dad-gum shifter in and out 12 times or so by now, maybe even a dozen. Jon at JB Fab has been very kind and helpful, but it's hard to diagnose from 2000 miles away and postage stamp pictures. Speaking of pictures, here's one for ya:

That is the position of the flags on the shift rods when in 4H. Yeah, the back shaft turns, the front shaft does not turn. So now I know that. Not a bunch of know-how being gained by this How in beautiful west Michigan.
