Heres one I will toss out there - I have a 302 with that goofy looking air filter housing that is low profile, with the bulk of the housing off to the passenger side - I cannot fit a filter on top of the carb - no clearance for the hood to close - 2 inches or less from carb to hood - would love to get cold air intake of some kind, - but dont know what if anything will fit in there besides what I have now - ideas anyone?.....

That is the factory air cleaner. There should be some flex tubing that leads up to the passenger headlight area for a factory cold air.
Just check with your favorite Bronco supply house and bring it back to stock. Cold air kit just like it was designed to be. Bonus, you get the hot air riser for better cold engine drivability (sends warm air off the outside of the exhaust to the carb to help vaporize the fuel on cold engines). Thermostatically controlled, vacuum operated, defaults to pure cold air under heavy load.

The original air cleaner is the best there is for early Broncos. The '71s had no cold air to the air cleaner. The '73s did. I'm not sure about '72s. The '73-'77s have a hard plastic/vinyl duct that runs behind the battery from a rectangular hole in the core support to the air cleaner snorkel through a flexible duct. - my air filter housing is rusty and has a few holes in it as well - thats big bucks to install on a rusty piece of crap lol I saw a pic of a low profile chrome with a hi flo filter on the end which rested on the wheel well but no clue who makes it - got to do something cuz that thing needs some cool air

Agree that would likely be the best. I like the stock and have sourced a few bits and pieces for one over the years. Looking forward to getting it set up that way if I don't go with MPFI in the end.
The opening in the grille, along with the bumpout for power steering started appearing in the core supports in late '72, but the actual cold-air system didn't come until very late in '72 when the '73 models were officially rolling off the line.
Too bad we didn't add that into the mix in Viper's "P's & Q's" thread. Would have been interesting to see if any original '72's got the later setup.
There are very low-profile round air cleaner assemblies of course. But they may need to be "modified" (or mangled if you prefer!) to clear the distributor caps and other intake components. And might still not be low enough without at least a slight body lift. That's where the 1" lifts come in handy once again.
Probably about time someone came up with an EB specific air cleaner, or a reproduction of the originals.

I used the factory Mustang Hi-Po 289 air filter assembly. It bolted right on, good sized air filter, looks stock price is decent too. No body lift, stock hood, Holley carb at the time.

Many of us have had this and unless you can fit under your closed hood to measure the distance between hood and carb I'd bet there is more than "two inches or less..." clearance. Do a search on Google using input "low profile carb air cleaner" and you'll get various types that will fit.
Like the idea of the stock assembly having cold air intake - motor runs to the warm side (new radiator and hoses motor flushed) it is as far as I can tell, around 2 inches clearance - tried lowest one in parts store just over 2 then add housing hood wouldnt close.

What's to be done with the stock "heat tube" when running headers? Any ideas or experience?

Edelbrock drop base canister with 14"x3" filter.
Ran that on my Windsor with a stock hood for 20+ years.
I think the Edelbrock base is a pretty deep drop but they are not the only ones.
BC has a deep drop base 13.5" low profile filter canister that works too.

It appears the Edelbrock would work, but then I am losing the cold air intake and hopefuly a little better performance I would get with the stock assembly - I will second Southernboys question - what to do with stock "Heat tube" when running headers?
