Alternative Steering Shaft Options

Just got a great deal on a new Delphi Rockcrawler Box for my '77, but didn't realize until I tried to install it that I need a new U-Joint for it to work. Jeff's sells a new full lower shaft for $250, but I'm looking to save a little $ if possible. I can pick up the new U-joint fairly cheap, so if I can get my hands on a new lower shaft (ha-ha) I can just weld the new u-joint on. I know the Rockcrawler box came from a 78-79 Full Size, so does anyone know if that shaft will work? If not, are there any other one's that might fit? Just looking for any alternative ideas I may be able to go with...

It does indeed.

It you saw off a piece of the FSB hollow steering shaft you will fine that the solid EB shaft slides insid of it perfectly. I machined a flat on the solid shaft to make it fit all the way to the bottom. As we discussed on other threads, you also get a collapsible link. I wouldn't weld on the EB shaft though.

You need to make sure you know what steering box you actually have delphi and the 4x4x2 box(78/79 pickup/bronco) are totally different and will have different requirements for input shafts.

You could buy a U joint to replace the rag joint (splines on one side, DD on the other) then get a U joint that will fit the box you have with DD on the opposite end. Then go to a machine shop or ever Lowes or HD and buy a length of 3/4 round stock. Have it cut to size and mill the DD on both ends.

I just did something similar on my 74. I took an old upper shaft I had laying around. I used the one end that fit the rag joint, and cut the end that would mount the steering wheel and then milled a DD to fit the new U joint to the Delphi 600 box. Works like a charm and cost me nothing as I got the milling done for free.
