Yes you can use the same harmonic bancer. They never changed the required balance weight for the 351. In 1981 they increased the size of the rods (made them stronger) in the 302 so they had to add more weight to the harmonic balancer to offset the additional weight. Hence the 28oz vs. 50oz balancer.

It all depends on if your hei dizzy has the same diameter shaft most dont in fact most hei dizzys I've seen are a basterdized ch#vy /ford combo where the bottom of a ford dizzy is welded to the upper ch#vy dizzy.

See if the gear comes off the Hei setup and the shaft is the same. If not your out of luck other than swapping out the cam for a non roller or just getting another dist. I've heard to many bad things about those cheap hei setups to even consider using one but to each his own.

I run the cheap HEI's in both of my 351Ws and they work great. I will get one for my 302 if the Duraspark ever dies. Call the place you got the HEI from and see if they have a gear for a roller cam.

measure the diameter of the distributor shaft at the gear. If it's the same, use a press & swap your gears.

Swapping a gear is easier than swapping a cam;D

you'll need cam lifters and pushrods. I'm sure you can find another dist much simpler than a cam swap. You can always get a duraspark and a steel gear. They are cheap and easy to convert along with being availible everywhere.

>>>> use the Ford system ..... they did a good thing by leaving the module & coil separate from the distributor housing....the only advantage of the HEI is the simpleton proof wiring........

Im not following why can't you just buy a new gear. summit sells a mallory gear for about 25 bucks pre drilled (so you don't have to even measure (unlike the fordmotorsports one.)) slide old gear off put new gear on drill out roll pin hole, new one will be larger, put pin in done deal.

You ever seen some of those cheapy hei dizzy's? The gear is not held on with a roll pin its welded on to a ch#vy upper shaft.

Then you may be ok as all you need to do is measure the shaft to see if your old gear will work if not I believe that there are 2 different sizes availible through most speed shops. At worst you might be able to get someone to machine the hole in the gear larger if theres enough material left to do it
