Another somewhat stealth bumper

Nice job! It feels good to have someone ask, "Hey man, nice bumper. Where did you buy it?" So you can reply, "I built it" with great pride. When I was building mine my neighbor came over and was checking me out. I had to tell him Monster Garage ain't got sh!t on me.

I will be building a rear eventually. Just trying to get my winch on for some wheeling this weekend.

Including what I bought and the scraps I had laying around I probably have around $100 in materials. (that includes some mistakes too and that reciever).

But steel isn't cheap these days and that 2x8 square tubing is $$$$


EDIT: Oh and thanks. Gonna try and have it all cleaned up and painted before dark so I will post up some more pics tonight.

I built the same style a while back. I'll be adding the hitch in the center as well. I just need a different fairleed to fit flush. That huge thing on there now gets hung up on rocks. Can't quite tell on yours but do you have a body lift? I have a 2" body lift so I mounted the 2x8 box tube on top to take up the gap. Worked out pro.
It only cost me $50 in steel but I know a few guys in the metal business. ;D
I was thinking of mass producing this type but my time is short these days.
Its a quick 1-1/2 day project though.

I am thinking of building something similar... can you describe how you did the angled ends.. I see that the main tom part is box tube, then it tapers.. that is the part I cant decide on how I want to do it.

After I cut a rectangle out the top of the box tube to fit the winch I knew how far to extend the 2x8 box tube off the frame. I wanted the winch 1/4" from touching the grill to keep the bumper low profile. To get the angle downward just set a staright edge from the bottom frame to the bottom of the 2x8. Now you know the angle. I used cardboard to make templates and extended it down the frame rails. At first the angle was too steep so I cut an inch out of the bottom of the frame to get more angle rather than pushing the 2x8 tube outwards. These side plates straddle both sides of each frame rail. Its then welded to the bottom of the 2x8. I bolted on top of the frame and through the sides. I also welded tube spacers in the frame rails so it wouldn't crush when tightening bolts. Others use 2x4 box tube and go inside the rails. Make your cuts in the 2x8 box tube from the edge of frame rail to edge of bumper, I went to 2" and caped it off. The front plate is easy to measure. The two small side angle skid plates I made using cardboard templates again.

the plate in the front i got.. but looking from above, the 2x8 tapers out as it gets closer to the head lights.. how did you cut that part?

I made a line from the outer edge of the frame rail/tip of 2x8 and went towards the body and left 2" to keep low profile but enough protection. I actually used my skillsaw with a metal cut off blade. Sounds weird but it works great. Nice clean lines and cuts fast.
Then capped off the end and front face with 2" flat stock. Here's another photo that might get the correct view...

That white bumper, is the winch mounted between the frame rails or on top of the frame?

I mounted it between the rails. I wanted the winch low and out of the way of the radiator air flow. The bumper is still no lower than the frame so I didn't lose any ground clearance. Here is how it went together.
