Blinding Fast Bronco

OK I sold my 1967 Camaro to buy my 69 Bronco. I had the Camaro for about 20 years and over the years did quite a few upgrades to it. It started as a stock 327 with powerglide trans. Before I started the upgrades, I took it out to a straight stretch of road and did multiple 0-60 mph runs to establish a baseline. When I started the Camaro would do 0-60 in 9 seconds. After all the standard upgrades, heads, exhaust, headers, cam, trans; the car would do 0-60 in 7 seconds.

So, today I take the Bronco out for a similar test. I wanted to establish a baseline to see how the upgrades affect things. This blinding fast Bronco did 0-50 mph in 14 seconds. Didn't go to 60 because it felt like it would take another 10 seconds.

So anyone out there with a nice 351, or 302 care to tell me how fast their Bronco will go 0-50, just so I know what's possible.

Mine is a '67 with the original virgin 289 no mods other than floor shift add on and it moves at a pretty good clip takes about 17 to hit 60. Then I have to pull in and fill the 13 gallon tank.

I have never checked? Mine would have to go on a diet to go fast! 5500#'s is not a race car stance...%)

Last time I checked mine would easily hit 60 in less than 10 seconds.
Is that good?

You're comparing apples to watermelons. Takes a bit more shove to get the watermelon moving.

You should be able to get under 10 seconds with a mild 302, though. Mine pulled pretty strong. I seem to remember timing it into the sub 9's to 60, but I have no idea what the PO did to the engine. That was also with a stop watch, so accuracy is suspect. Swapped in a '94 5.8 and EFI, and I can't say it went any faster. In my opinion it's not how fast you go, but how fast it feels like you're going.

60? That's my top speed, I'm sure it can go a lot faster than that but I want to see my son grow up lol.

Interesting that you are applying the same "success" criteria to a Bronco as you did to your Camaro. Very few folks on here are building their Bronco based on 0 to 60 times. What was the Camaro's RTI score before and after? LOL

Kidding aside, 0 to 60 time is not something that important to most Bronco builders. That said, I am sure there are quite a few who have greatly improved this and have very respectable straight line acceleration. Bax's efi 408 is one. Roadburner's is probably another - but he's best known for his burnouts! ;D

Unless you want to add the comensurate race car/truck suspension to your Bronco, 0-60+ isn't a real important factor with these babies. Our bone stock 1970 with a 302 will get up to highway speed in the length of a freeway on ramp no problem. The short wheelbase and lack of sophisticated suspension don't lend themselves to gobbs of power and speed. In the MN/WI area to much of these will get you whipping unexpected donuts in the middle of the freeway in the winter.

Hotrod the motor, tilt the front axle way back so the truck wants to keep going straight, put 3 shocks per wheel on it with enough damping to control a dump truck. Brave men drove them fast back in the 70's like that. Don't forget a roll bar and vintage Bell helmet.

A lot of this has to do with drivetrain specifics; which tranny, what axle gearing, etc... I have a 5 speed & 4.11 gears and can hit 0-60 is well below 10s....

If you have the stock 3-speed or C4, it's going to be slow. Those are 3 long legged gears which require a lot of HP to get through...

Donsbolt runs 14's in the 1/4 mile with a hot 5.0, 5 spd trans, and 4.56 gears. I would guess my 350hp 347 stroker, 4.56 gears, and 5 spd runs 14's also. It is VERY fast and scary.

1973 with stock 302, stock carb, stock intake, stock exhaust, stock trans, stock gears.

0-50 mph : [strike]yes[/strike] maybe ;D

Regarding the 0-100 in 13...is that MPH? Or KmPH?

Back in the day, I would race my 486HP EB MX racer in the sand drags just for giggles and something else to do between the MX events. I would turn times in mid 4-second range and around 60mph which compared "OK" with the true sand racers (running blown alcohol big blocks and paddle tires) that would be down in the 2's..

So I'll call that 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. And 60 was about the limit with the gears I ran; 60 mph at the redline of 7800-8000 RPM.

Well at least I know it's possible to get there. The main reason for doing this is to establish a baseline to see how the mods actually work

The car is 100% street driven, just need 4X4 for the Alaska winters.

First upgrade is going to be Holley 4v and Performer intake.

Short wheel base and usually taller stance then stock can make 'em handle a little squirrly, when you add some power. What doesn't effect cars or long wheel base trucks will be very noticable in a Bronco, or heep. Steering goemetry, suspension ( front and rear ), and drivelines need to be in good shape before laying a bunch of power down, have fun and be safe.
