Got a truck in the shop that I just put a new engine in. The trans was rebuilt and apparently came out of an early model mustang. The neutral safety switch will not line up. It fits and will bolt into place but not function. If I rotate the switch about an inch I can get the park/neutral start function to work. Here are some photos. 1st as it should be installed, 2nd rotates so the p/n function works. I’ve tried 3 different switches.
Ford used different switches for different cars and mustangs had at least 3 different switches. How do I figure out which one I need???

Any crazy chance you have it on backwards? Flip it over is what I am saying in case that is not clear.

Also it looks like a Lokar shifter with the rod. To use that I had to remove my NSS because it clamped on to that part of the shaft. You get NSS by a switch on the shifter but no back up lights. That was a crappy design.

It’s not 180 out. I check that. Compared it to the other c4 have in the shop. Double checked the internal linkage and it’s connected correctly. I removed the stock shift arm from the shifter and modded the lokar arm to clear the p/n switch.

>> you have to use a guide pin/drill bit for adjusting.... linkage removed done... put the trans in neutral... see that little hole above the shaft... insert a pin or drill bit 0.091" in diameter(#43 bit)... start moving the switch around... the pin needs to engage 3 sections in the switch to a total depth of 31/64"... then lock down the 2 mounting bolts...

It looks like it is 180° out, flip it around. Mustang, vs Bronco, vs Van to Truck the shift shafts as far as I have ever found are all the same. It could simply be a difference in MFG of the NSS switch.

I just looked at a few pics online and your first photo looks correctly installed. It must not be aligned use the drill bit.

Thanks guys. I’ll give it a whirl. I didn’t know the switches could be adjusted. Awesome.

Here is what a smart guy on 73-79 Ford trucks told me a long time ago about the NSS. Maybe it will help out?

"When the trucks came with a manual trans, there was a dummy plug used to bypass the NSS switch. I've never been able to come up with a part number for the dummy plug. To bypass the automatic set up: Unplug the switch and discard or ignore.

There are four wires in the harness plug, two each, red w/ blue trace and black w/ red trace. Run a jumper between the red/blue and red/blue, do the same for the black/red. That completely bypasses the NSS switch. Your truck will now start and the back-up lights will be permanently on. Now on to the backup lights.

In the engine compartment is a little U shaped jumper wire. It'll be located on the drivers side splash pan, just in front of the firewall where the wiring harness comes through. Unplug the little jumper, this will shut off the back up lights. There should be a back up light switch on the trans cover. Run two wires from the switch to the two wires that were jumped. This will get your back up lights working again.

Just a note, you could make a jumper plug out of the NSS. Cut the switch off the harness and splice the two pairs of wires. I just hate to cut these switches up. New, they're getting pricey. EDIT: If you don't care about the back up lights, just jumper the red w/ blue trace wires. This will by pass the NSS but the back up lights won't work."

The other diagram is for manual trans guys that have done a swap to a NP-435 or T-18...By passing a NSS is a safety issue, in some folks world.

I haven't found any c4 shift shafts or switches that are clocked differently. Some shafts are not splined for the switch. Are you certain the trans is in neutral when you are fitting the switch? That would be fully clockwise and back 2 clicks.

I’ll double check when I get back in there tonight.

Nope didn’t work. Put trans in neutral. Aligned the switch with drill bit per manual. Put truck in park and no start dis connect nss and jump the connections and it starts. I’m really confused. Never ever had a nss switch problem like this

I know it will start in drive! Not where I want it. Lol. I’m gonna do a work around for now until I get this mess figures out. This truck has fought kicking and screaming since it rolled into the shop. I’ll beat cause I’m more stubborn. Any other ideas throw em out.
