Well I drove the Bronco to Charleston from Tampa today. The trip was 440 miles and I was extremely happy with how things went. The transmission does very well with the gearing. I cruised at 60-65 MPH @ 2000 RPM. I was able to maintain speed up slight grades without downshifting and the trans temp did not go above 160 degrees. My average MPG was 12.5 which is not awesome but I did have a lot of crap backed up for the URE run since the Bronco is staying in Charleston until November.

I was also pleased with my engine temp. Did not even think about going even a degree above 185.

Success is soooo sweet. This swap was a pain in the A** but in the end, worth the ability to cruise on the highway at a reasonable RPM.

Also tried to attach my calibration file if anyone wants to get a better look or make any suggestions but we only have privileges for picture files. tried to change extension from BTC to JPG and the system still called me out on it. Booo!!

Thx.

Actually, that's the main reason I started my Yahoo AOD Group. At the time, there was no place to upload or trade .btc files. There's still not a lot of files there :( but if you you feel you (or anyone else does!) have a good calibration file, please join and upload it! ;D

what cooler are you running?

I have a 8x8 from summit and I went on a 400 mile round trip this weekend and it was at 225 the whole way while it was 95 outside. seems pretty high.

Sorry I didn't get back with you sooner. I missed your post and just happened to come across it.

I am running the Imperial Maxi-Kool® XL Transmission Oil Cooler from Advanced Auto Parts. It is mounted in front of the radiator and is connected in series with the radiator. It is 11"x11". It is ram air only, no fan.

Are you measuring from the controller or on the cooler line output on the transmission with a gauge?

Depending on where you measured, I would say that is pretty high too. I am not sure how valid these charts are, but it is something I do reference. I try to keep the temp as low as I can with the caveat that I want to get it to operating temperature initially since keeping it cold too long is not good.

Just tallied up my receipts and updated the numbers at the beginning of the writeup.

My total 4R70W cost was.....

$1,980.00

There were additional costs like exhaust modifications and swapping out my headers but I did not include them since the headers were optional and the exhaust modifications were nominal.

It cost a bit more than I had budgeted but I am so pleased with the results.

I am running a Ron Davis Aluminum radiator.

Are you running the trans to the radiator or the aux cooler first?

I run it to the radiator and then the aux cooler. My engine never goes above 185*.

I only have the one external trans rad infront of the main radiator for the engine and a 2 speed fan pulling through both of them

Just friggin WOW!!!

How in the HELL has this not come up before? I understand this is not a frequent conversion and we are taking a risk cheaping out on parts but goodness gracious this is nucking futs! I would have flipped my lid if I found trans fluid migrating into the D20.

Well, I am placing the project on hold until this issue is resolved. 77broncodriver, please keep us informed on your progress with this seal. I am not doing a thing until I hear back from you with the results. Viperwolf, thanks for the warm fuzzy with the P/N confirmation. I hope both of you are right.

I need another case of beer :(

If it maKES YOU FEEL ANY BETTER MY c4 DOES THAT.....Buts about to become a zf! back to my reading!

If you turn your fan on and place a business card on the front of the trans cooler, does it stay or fall?

Awesome write up. My next project. Pulling c4 to do 4r70w in the next few weeks. Plan on using an atlas though.

For the record, i am not a fan of the lokar dipstick.

The opening is super small compared to the c4. Have to use an adapter to allow use of funnel each time i fill.

Also, the dipstick is difficult to read. I get readings on the hashed side but it is so fine and the fluid is so light i always have to touch to make sure there is actually fluid. Also, the backside is always dry. This always makes me question the validity of the readings.

I think i am going to score the upper limit of the stick myself for better readings.

It is a good looking dipstick though but i prefer function of form.

I have a Lokar flex dip tube on my C4 and it also requires the special adapter to fill. Without it you will spend hours putting fluid in.

On two C4's I have the same dip stick, but BOTH had to be modified to work. The elbow that screws into the pan is so long that is likely going to interfere with something.

Agree

Sounds like you have one of the older gray teflon dipsticks. Being able to read them was also a complaint and yes I have told many and guy to take a some coarse sand paper and scuff the telfon to the fluid would stick to it. The new tranny dipsticks from LOKAR actually have 1/8dia cable with a swedged end for the full and low reading. Yes you will also ways have to use the funnel adapter to add fluid, but now it concerns me as to where your leak is if you are adding fluid that much;D

Just curious?

I know most Broncos have the screw in style pan, but doesn't it also have the hole in the case for the normal push in dipstick? Or why not switch to this style when and if the tranny needs to be rebuilt? Just curious and we have installed a couple of those C-4 screw in dipsticks with not interference issues, even with our full length headers.

No leak. Just been busy. Pulled trans 3 times, replaced trans pump and TC all trying to isolate an engine issue which is now resolved.

hey chuzie just want to let you know that i found drips of trans fluid under the bronco today, opened the fill port on the d20 and out poured a quart or so of the trans fluid. seems like the seal didnt work out for the long run.

im going to call advanced adapters and see if i can buy just the shaft and seal that is right for the 4r adapter.

out comes everything again!

maybe yours is lasting longer but worth it to check

Evan
