You home for awhile Evan? I was over at Tim's all day yesterday working on his and we were thinking you were still at school. So didn't call to say come on over and play with someone else's Bronco for awhile! Good stress-reliever at least.
It's almost there (theoretically) with maybe one more session, so we'll call next time.

Anyway, sorry you're having that issue. Hopefully A/A will sell the stuff separately.
Good luck.

Oh geez!

A few questions...

How many miles have you put on that seal?
What temperatures has your transmission been running?
Can you do a full autopsy on the seal to determine if it was damaged?

I know most Broncos have the screw in style pan, but doesn't it also have the hole in the case for the normal push in dipstick?

No they do not.

Or why not switch to this style when and if the tranny needs to be rebuilt?

The case-fill style case is smaller but weaker than the pan-fill style case. Ford always used the pan-fill case in trucks, vans and large cars for a reason.

BTW- that seal is rated at 220* +/- 40*. Gosh I sure hope you installed it backwards or cocked or scratched or something. I checked my xfer case and no abnormal fluid or fluid level.

I took it apart today and found that the seal was spinning in there, it was holding onto the shaft so I'm guessing the oil was seeping around the seal.

I am going to go get some rtv and put it on the mating surface and let it sit over night and put it all back together. I'm getting pretty good at taking the xcase on and off.

You guys have any recommendations on what type of rtv to use?

- Evan

I am guilty of sometimes using RTV as an adhesive and this situation is no exception. Do I wait for failure to occur or bite the bullet and fix it?

Let's see how your fix goes first.
So, what was your mileage before failure?

I actually did put a little rtv around it, I did it before I saw the post. I already have it together so I'm hoping that putting the seal in the right way this time will help enough to fix it and the rtv doesn't mess it up. If it happens again ill go and buy the locktite stuff.

I had probably 1000 miles on it tops

I texted Evan's dad a little while ago suggesting, if he's using RTV instead of the recommended stuff, that he at least wait a week for it to set up good and hard before driving it.
That seem reasonable, or overkill? I know the stuff is supposed to "set up" fully in 24 hours (usually), but that didn't seem like enough for all of this work to go awry again. Figured on giving it more of a fighting chance.
You have that luxury of time Evan? Or are you on the clock, so to speak?

Good luck.

Chuzie, do you remember if you installed and rand yours right away, or if there was some additional "build-time" in between?

The only time it had to set was the time it took to assemble and get it running; a couple hours at best.

And I had it in backwards...

Just saw this. Not sure how I missed it the other day. Well, it is both good and bad news since we can't be 100% sure it was the backwards position or the lack of security. Time will tell.....

You just inspired me to order a new seal and new gasket to have on hand just in case.

This sealing the tc from the tranny oil correct? So the lip of the seal has to face the tranny correct? Just want to make sure I have to take mine apart and put the seal in sometime soon before I run it.

Correct. The open face (lip) goes towards the liquid area (transmission) and the flat face towards the rear or xfer case.
Think of it just like an axle seal.
