HI!

excuse my dumbness, but, can you guys please tell me what all is involved in converting my 5.0 efi back to a carb set-up. I have a feeling its more involved than just yanking all the efi stuff off and then installing a manifold and carb. If you could tell me everything i need to do it would be much appretiated! Also, It is matted to a 4r70w AOD controlled by a bauman opti shift. Will this tranny work with a carburated motor or not?

thanks so much!

I'm pretty sure the tranny will work with a carb as it has a stand alone computer. as for converting back other than yanking off the EFI stuff and installing a intake and carb you pretty much only need a distributer with a steel gear if you have a roller cam. if your engine is not a roller cam engine then you just need a cast iron gear which is what most electronic igintion type dizzys will come with. the stock ford Duraspark dizzy is easy to install and you can get a steel gear for it if needed. Other than that you dont need to do anything else.
Why do you want to convert back? there's a lot of knowledgeable guys that can help if your having issues.

thanks broncnaz! I know there is a lot of really smart bronco guys on here, problem is that I have very limited skills and money. the reason I feel the need to go back to carb is because I bought a 70 half cab from a guy on this site. I spent my life's savings on it. The guy was very dishonest, said the thing was turn key and go....runs perfect, drives perfect, blah, blah, blah! I know, I was stupid to buy it site un seen. But you see I live in Hawaii and i couldnt afford to fly all the way to florida to check it out, and like most people from hawaii im too trusting. a friend of mine went to check it out but i guess he new less about broncos then i thought. Anyway, the truck broke down in cali after gettting off the transporter and has been stuck there since jan! Its been to 3 different mechanics and no one can seem to figure out why its running like shit except that it's probably something having to do with the fuel injection. I have very little money left and i feel like this this is the best option.......

Take it to a ford dealership and have them fix the injection. if it ran before it will run again. I think you will have more trouble and a bigger mess going back to carb at this point.

maybe somebody on here who lives in Ca can recommend a local mechanic who is familiar with efi and can get it running. is reason for no run efi related?

why do you want it running in Ca? planning to drive it to Ha? have it shipped to Ha and get someone to fix it there where you can oversee it.

but whatever you do DON'T REMOVE THE EFI. you'll regret it forever.

i didnt understand your first question jw. I was planning to ship it to hawaii but that 1,200 is long gone thanks to the dick that sold me the truck and the unexpected repair bills. even if i had the 1,200 right now, you cant tow a car/truck onto the barge it has to be in working condition.

good advice blue, but if the dealerships are anything like they are in hawaii. they are more expensive than your average mechanic and the bill always seems like it comes out to be 500-700 over what they quote you

Intake manifold, gaskets, carburetor, in-line low pressure fuel pump, air cleaner, distributor and module, and 4-5 hundred in labor.

Versus simply fixing what is the simplest, most realiable and easily diagnosed EFI on the planet?

I dunno about you, but.....

You would also need to add a throttle position sensor to the carb for the opti shift.

I agree, it makes no sense to swap back. EFI shouldn't take much money to fix if it is truely an EFI problem. If it's an internal engine problem you'll still have it after spending a small pile of money and converting back to a carb.

3 mechanics couldn't make it run???

one of the simplest EFi systems out there. you can replace evry sensor and the ECU and not spend a lot of money. probably less than having three mechanics work on it. Any ford dealer or mustang tuner shop will probably get it running in no time and it will be cheaper that converting to carb.

EFI on mine is one ofthe best things I did, wouldn't even consider going bsck to a carb.

Shoot 73stallion a PM, he may be able to help. Seems Like a Bronco guy could fix it for a lot cheaper than switching to a carb. Especially if it was running before.

If it's in port in Southern CA somewhere, I would bet that Ric Kolibar would take it on gladly. I think his username here is Hawk. He is very sharp when it comes to EFI and has helped many a Bronco brother out with EFI no start issues. I will let him know about this thread.

Everyone complains about the cost of taking it to the dealership. I am a ford technician and I see it everyday. You just said you spent 1200 on repairs at three different shops. And you said a dealership always cost around 5-700. well, if it went to the dealership in the first place, it would have cost you 700(most likely less), and it would be fixed. The bottom line is that someone at the ford service department will open the hood and be familiar with the system, and most likely will have fixed 1000 of those engines before. Hopefully someone from this site will hook you up. but if not, the next shop it goes to should be someone who is an expert on the paricular ford injection system, and has unlimited amounts of resources and equipment to properly diagnose the problem.
