Yes, but there is a limit obviously.
They came behind 351's from the factory in some applications, including some trucks. The newer the transmission the better, which I believe to be '71 and later vintage.
An originally 4wd model (or Bronco-specific even better) with the "pan fill" design, rather than the "case fill" design (where the dipstick tube enters either the trans case or the sump pan) is better too.

Should work fine unless you are an animal with a really highly built engine. The heavier truck application puts more stress on any trans, so if heavy right foot is your middle name, perhaps a built transmission is a good option too.
