Differences in AA NP435/D20 adapters

A while ago I picked up an extra advance adapters adapter for my NP435 to D20 set up since I have two transfer cases and two transmissions.
As I was doing a transmission swap this week, I noticed that the part which I had picked up was about half an inch shorter overall then the one I have presently installed. It also has a much wider shift tower for the transfer case and it's nearly impossible to use bolts, I could potentially see Alan heads with a u-jointed socket wrench.
As a result of the differences, I plan on using the one which is currently running and possibly bolting the spare set up together with the one that I have acquired.
I guess this is mostly just commentary and informational in case anybody is in the same boat.

The Allen headed bolts sound right. ~25 year old? I recall that one of the Allen bolts needs to be shaved slightly so it doesn't hit a gear inside when tightened down.

I bought the adapter I'm using now in about 94. I'm guessing that my spare, the one which is shorter but wider is earlier than that.
