Yeah man, I want it all! No, I used to be a hard ass and now I'm old, but I still have the same truck.

Well, if you still have a dual system, you might try taking it to the muffler shop to have an "H" pipe installed just ahead of the mufflers. It quiets the exhaust quite a bit. It also reduces backpressure.

Another thought...
A four barrel and full flow air cleaner is noisy too. If you shoehorn in a dual snorkel air cleaner from an '87 Mustang GT, it will quiet it down a lot.

Few things that have been overlooked.

The pipe itself. Thicker wall will be quieter. Some quiet cars even went to the trouble to go double wall, pipe in a pipe.

Manifolds are quieter then headers, but if you have to have headers look for thick wall.

At some point you can get the exhaust quiet enough that it is no longer the biggest source of noise. Cooling fans can be a huge source of noise.

Air filter? That high flow open flow air filter makes for a lot of induction noise. That heavy gauge air cleaner with a long snorkel is good at keeping intake noise inside the engine.

Alternators make noise. There is even a water cooled alternator that runs quieter. Not likely to get to the point that this will matter.

Remember that nylon coated timing gear that the teeth fall off of? That was done to make the engine quiet.

Oh yeah, we're getting down to it now. If I can even tell that stuff exists, then I'll be in good shape. I was honestly kind of hoping for a testimonial where someone says, You know, my truck is ridiculously quiet and this is exactly how I did it. But these are all great points and I appreciate the help. Although I'm not sure what the difference between good quality ear plugs and poor quality ear plugs is but I digress. One question I have in my research is what is the difference between a 2:1 with a muffler that has 2 inlets and a 2:1 with a Y before the muffler? I'm seeing a lot about the BC Broncos setup and also a lot about the Walker 21400. But a Y was previously discussed in this thread and was part of the stock system. What's the end result difference in the two? Again, thanks for all the help.

I did ceramic headers, 2 into 1 to walker quietflow, resonator and 2.5" the whole way. I can tell you that I still hear the exhaust but not when the engine is revving. The fan/whir of the engine is what I hear now. I put some exhaust cutouts on it too, so I can go loud when not in the neighborhood.

I think a 2 into 1 muffler is a better performer than a Y pipe, but a Y pipe may be a quieter set up....

I have the BC broncos system with the magnaflow muffler. It's pretty dang quiet. I had an exit added behind the wheel as it doesn't come with one. I was expecting it to be loud but wasn't much louder than my stock exhaust

What did you use for the resonator? Thanks for all the info everyone. I think I'm leaning towards the Y. Walker makes a super huge round muffler for Ford vans and pickups with a single inlet. Obviously, I don't want to choke it completely off flow wise, but as long as I can get it to run smooth, I'm definitely willing to sacrifice a few horses.

I have read, but no physical proof, that the Y pipes will build better power and flow because of their more streamlined approach, it is like a Y vs. and H for example. I seriously doubt we will ever really notice the difference in power unless you are strapping ti to a dyno for before and after numbers however, know that the note we hear is due to sound waves and the pulses, I believe the Y pipe will help to do some natural cancellation. I know the Bronco Hut standard muffler vs the turbo muffler is night and day different for me, which you can also go quieter yet over the turbo. Again a resonator may be a big help if you are not quiet enough no matter which system you build, with a Y pipe, it will be easier to add a resonator vs the 2 into 1 mufflers because the resonator should go before the muffler. When researching the mufflers, most are actually 1 in and 2 out for dual tailpipes with only a very few manufacturers making a 2 in and 1 out which in the fine print is the same muffler as their 1 in and 2 out just simply turned around so how it would benefit for flow is debateable.

Resonators and big mufflers will probably quiet it down, but there is not much room under there to get fancy.

How quiet do you want? Modern car ,modern truck or stock bronco. You want your engine to breath a little. I have a 74 with almost the same set up you have on your 302.I have 2 in and 1 out magnaflow muffler .Pipe size is 2 1/2 in and 3 inch out. Wright now it dumps before the axle, I think it's not to loud, but I like the deep rumble. and

Nice truck. That is pretty dang quiet too. Your engine bay sounds a lot like mine. Thanks for the reply. I could handle that. I think I've got a plan now. Thanks all.

2 in or a Y before? well it depends on how it is done. How the muffler is engineered and built. You can have a really good 2 in muffler, or one that has one good port and one bad port. There is no one size fits all answer to such a generic question.

Just put it in neutral and push it out of the driveway when your trying to sneak out at night and then cut the power and coast in when coming back....the wife will never know you were gone!

get a pair of 70 series flowmaster ;)

Tried that, still not that quiet. Walker quiet flow is quieter.

If you want quiet, don't shop any of the performance mufflers. They are all out to make sound. Try finding a stock exhaust off a new Bently or Rolls. They know how to make 600+HP quietly.

It think I'm going to stuff a giant walker quiet flow in there. They make a round one for e-150's that I'm thinking about trying out.

I used the stock muffler off of a 5.0 explorer turned sideways. It's two inlets, one outlet. Reasonably quiet, and ford used good steel to make it so they really never rust out. If you wanted quieter, putting a pair of cherry bomb's between the engine and muffler works really well.

I was looking at some of the later pickup (Ford, Chevy, Dodge) and some of those have 2 into 1, 2", 2 1/2" even 3". They are really big but may still fit. They are pretty quiet and can flow a ton of air most make 400hp stock. Plus they are stainless steel and should last forever.

Summit has a resonator that's only 12" total length, I may even try to stuff that in there too. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.
