I’ll get the timing corrected and then see what happens. The reason for using explorer tb and maf is because I didn’t have mustang stuff, and I thought it was larger in size so figured it would work better on 351.
The explorer injectors I believed to be 19lb.

What are the size differences between explorer and mustang tb and MAF?
Well, that kinda depends on which Mustang you are talking about.

The factory (edit 5.0, not a 351W) in the 93 Mustang used a 65mm throttle body, and a 70mm MAF, and 24lb injectors.
The Explorer 5.0 used a 65mm throttle body and a 70mm MAF, and 19lb injectors.
The SN95 (94-95) Mustang 5.0 used a 65mm throttle body and a 70mm MAF, and 19lb injectors.
The 89-93 Mustang 5.0 used a 60mm throttle body and a 55mm MAF and 19lb injectors.

For some reason when putting this stuff together recently, the actual maf sensor screws were loose, like maybe I swapped the electronic part. I wish I would not have waited 10 years to finish this because now my memory is fading.

This is good info thanks.
The 93 with 351, was it a cobra? What ecu did it use?

That one threw me for a loop too - the '93 Cobra R was the top dog that year and still used a 5.0. I don't know of any Fox body cars that had 351Ws. The SN95 '95 Cobra R had a 351W - maybe that's what James is referring to?

X3Z catch code. It was unique to that model. Scarce as hens teeth and wouldn’t help you without the matching injectors (24 lb/hr) and Cobra MAF. The Explorer MAF would still confuse it.

And I’ll betcha that your timing is way off unless by some coincidence the harmonic balancer you have required a timing pointer in the same location as the Explorer 5.0 piece.

So what maf should I be looking for?

Also, I made a pointer as per the instructions in the tech article explorer 5.0 serp belt system, but did not mark neew location on the balancer.
I’m amazed it is running

If you are admitting to making a mistake, fear not. Betcha my list is longer than your list…

That’s because I’m an idiot. Yes, the 93 cobra r was a 5.0, and the 95 cobra r was the 5.8. Oops.

I always get those mixed up. The 93 5.0 was GT-40 induction. And the 5.8 Lightning upper was a bolt on. Then the 95 Cobra R came out with the 351w.

Sorry for any confusion. I’m pretty sure I’m in the lead on the mistake counter.

Yeah well, I’ll see you and raise you one. X3Z is the catch code for the 93 5.0 Cobra, not the 95 351W. My bad. What I get for relying on my feeble memory.

What ever. Jam a Moates Quarterhorse into an A9P and sprinkle some Binary Editor or TunerPro RT software magic onto it and you can transmogrify the ECU into anything you want.

I dabbled in tuning my previous 5.0 long ago via a Tweecer RT and BE. Thought I’d done a pretty good job. When I recently dropped in a 408 I decided to let someone else do it. This time a guy who goes by Decipha in New Orleans. The baseline tune he sent me had the 408 running better than I ever managed with my 5.0 and as a bonus I didn’t have to remember any of the stuff I’d forgotten about tuning.

Decipha is who I am taking mine to when I get finished for its final tune on his dyno, the mustang guys swear he is the best in the world.
I have a Lightning 351w with 2000 Explorer EFI . Only 5 hours drive from me.

Quarterhorse and BE come with instructions?
My laptop is like 9-10yrs old will it work with it??
My computor experience is 1 finger typing, no where near as good as Pa Pitt.

I got the base timing set at 10 degrees, it was way off, plus I had to pull dust and retard it a tooth .
Took it for a ride in the yard and now it is very responsive 👍.
I need to do a couple more things and then get a registration so I can drive on the road a bit and see what it is like.

Congratulations! The Explorer MAF may not play well with an A9P but it's not that bad. I had a hunch it would run ok once you got the basics taken care of.

Your old laptop might work, but it's going to be slow. Not a whole lot of typing involved but instructions for the Quaterhorse and the software to talk to it are obscure even when you are used to reading that sort of thing. It's a lot of work.
