Do you just want to change them or do you want to swap them out and go electronic ignition? If it is the latter, you can go with the pertronix kit or go to the wrecking yard and get a duraspark ford unit. Thats what I did. If you just need to change the points out, remove the screws and pull them out. Replace them the same way you took the old ones out.

Nope, that won't work. These are the elctronic points for the '75 and later models.....not the typical points you're used to.

I have the replacement points, but can't figure out how to get that gear head off the top of the distributor. This has to be done before you can remove the points.

Why are you replacing the pick up coil in the distributor? Is it bad? On electronic models there is no wear on the pick up, it either works or it doesn't.
Just wondering..

Hell, I went down to get some points for the distributor and this is what they gave me. Are you telling me that you would just replace the entire distributor?

What exactly did they sell you? Do you have the factory Duraspark ignition? What do the parts look like? When you say points I think old school points/condensor. The electronic dizzy has a pick up assembly and a stator (gear looking thing). If you need to replace this assembly, then I'm guessing your ignition isn't firing? But yes, if I knew my pick up assembly was bad I would probably replace the dizzy (like $40). Now if you have a points distributor then thats a different story, quick 5 minute swap. Sorry for the confusion, I think the terminology has got me puzzled.

Just the electronic pickup. I replaced my duraspark dizzy with a rebuilt from autozone for 40.

That 8-pointed star deelie-bober is your Rotor (reluctor). I was able to get mine off by using two flat screwdrivers on opposite sides prying the rotor upward with even pressure on both sides. If it's not rusted, it should come off fairly easy. It's held in place by a roll pin thats about 1/4" long and very tiny. It sits in a groove between the distributor shaft and the Rotor. The new rotors usually come with a new roll pin but dont' forget to fish the old one out with a magnet because it will fall out of place when you pry the rotor off. You will need a 1/16" pin pinch to install the new roll pin & rotor. Hope that helps.

BH

Hey Howie,

That's exactly what I did, but thanks for the reply. Also, there was a little spring clip inside the post that had to be removed as well.
