What would cause a light ticking/ knock sound when I start the engine when it is cold. It goes away once the engine comes up to temp. It's a ford racing crate 302 engine with full roller rockers and less than 1000 miles on it?

At seriously cold temperatures, aluminum pistons have a modest, measurable size change. Factor in modern, light weight engine oils and your can easily hear the piston slap at start up. Such has been a big issue with the Ford, modular motor. Engineers designed the iron block with highly advance FEA to be no stronger then necessary to save weight. Complaints of piston slap on start up forced a redesign to add mass to acoustically dampen the noise.
.. Take the Fram Filter off it.
.. If not then lifter or exhaust.
I though I'd found my ticking noise. have new..new to the engine, 20 years in a box new lifters..wonder if I should get new..new ones...hate to pull the intake again..
You may have a valve thats sticky. Weak lifters wouldnt cause a bent pushrod. New old lifters shouldnt be a issue they really just sit in the box all that time. As long as the plunger will move they are fine. If the plungers are stuck they it could cause a bent pushrod. Id run some marvel mystery oil in the engine for awhile it should free up anything that may be sticking.
