Exhaust System Sounds

It seems like exhaust systems comes up quite often, and one of the main questions people have is 'how does it sound'? I think it would be awesome if you guys with various exhaust systems could post either a wave file, or a youtube link of just how these different systems sound.

I know personally I'm most interested in hearing the complete BCB system, at idle, cruise, and WOT.

I think this would help solve a lot of questions...

So please post up.

The trouble is a lot of the sound is also a lot of the feel. I have yet to hear an exhaust on the computer that can compare to what it really sounds like. It is way too easy to have the volume on the computer way off from what it really sounds like. What on a computer sounds like a hum could be a mild hum or a "what, can't hear you!" hum of the same frequency. But to tell the difference on a computer, not with todays technology. You may get a few of the tone effects, but you will miss too much of the real experience to really tell what it sounds like.

My Bronco for example, on tape it sounds rather boring. But in person you can really experience it, sounds the same, but the feel is different.

This is my 408w within the first five minutes of run time. Poorly tuned and the map sensor was not hooked up. It sounds much quieter now at idle but sounds the same otherwise

Hooker 9814 / Flowmaster 50 series #943050 / 1 each 3" Univ Interm Pipe Kit FLO-15927 (this kit fits like a glove around all four COR frame tie-ins) / 1 each Tailpipe Kit FLO-15902 (instead, recommend two each FLO-26036 after seeing it in this kit) / Weld-on collector rings SUM-G4761 / O2 bung SUM-G2990.

The trouble is a lot of the sound is also a lot of the feel.

I agree, most all of the sound energy (90% ) is below 100hz. Most microphones on cameras and such are filtered above that for wind & machinery noise reduction. recording would have to be done with the proper equipment.

here at my work I reconstructed a car (minus engine and wheels) in an office and filled it with speakers & subwoofers to recreate road and car noise for testing purposes. The big rig diesel recordings are pretty cool. they shake the whole building.

As mentioned before, without a reference sound level, it's tough to compare. If every recording started with a -20db 1K tone, it would go a long way towards a meaningful comparision. Another problem is most folks seem to have the AGC (automatic gain control) on the camera on so it's constantly adjusting the volume for what it believes is optimum. Mic's are the third problem. Not only do most (ok, all) on camera mic's suck, they can't handle either the low frequency or the max db's that an exhaust system can produce.
I've got the gear that would record accurately but not the exhaust system you're looking for. Mine is WH shorties to dual 2 1/4's into magnaflows with a crossover at the tranny.

Does anyone have a single 3" setup with headers? I"m interested in going that route to avoid having the drivers side pipe hanging below the frame...

Without all the "TECHNIBABBLE" can we do it?
Remember, your audience is a bunch of knuckle draggers with 30+ year old cars.

Obviously the recorded sound won't be exact or 'what you can feel' but it would help get a general idea of what we are going to get ourselves into. I'd sure hate to spend $6-700+ on an exhaust system and hate the way it sounds.

I've got the BCB set up headers and super single magnaflow. I added a 3" single back over the rear axle and dumped it just infront of the rear bumper up and out of the way. It is loud as h@ll. ;D It flows very very well, but I drive with earplugs in if I'm on the freeway. Cruising around town or putting around in the woods its not bad but if the engine is pulling forget about listening to the radio or having a conversation with anyone.
I personally like it for the this truck because I built it for fun and as a hot rod. I would not install this on my daily driver. I will do a super single on that truck but I'll run a quiet turbo muffler.

Just what I am looking for ;D This rig will have a locked D60 up front, locked D70 in the rear, cut Boggers and 6" of lift... the sound will match it perfectly...

Most duals I've heard seem to "blaaaat" more than I care for, maybe a lack of a crossover?

Lack of one would certainly have an effect. Still depends on the overall system, including mufflers, but in many (most?) cases a crossover "smooths" the sound somewhat.

Mine sure did!
I typically like the sound of a lopey cam and true duals through cheap turbo mufflers. The sound takes me back to my youth!;) ;) ;)

Cool concept, but I wonder how long it would last. Seems stuff in the exhaust systems that are moving, don't for long.
