It's pretty tight, no body lift. The more I learn and the fact that the bronco is 99% on pavement/dirt roads I may just go with a direct bolt on Edelbrock carb.

The Carter AFB is a pretty good street only carb, I would assume that the Edelbrock clone is the same. I was very happy with the AFB that I had on the Ranchero. I had to make up a jetting chart because the Edelbrock's were new on the scene and their jetting process hadn't been available. Once I made that chart the tuning got fairly easy and that carb ran great.

How does an improperly adjusted air door end up causing a fire? That sounds like a pretty important step!
Hi DirtDonk, sorry for the late reply. Haven't been on lately. The fire happened when the wife and I were coming home from sailing most of the day and I simply "got on it" a little heavy on the last 1/2 mile to our neighborhood. Once I posted the carnage after the fact, quite a few people chimed in that the same thing had happened to them. Theory is that w/ the rear air doors not opening up, it created a very rich mixture and most likely some of that fuel ended up slightly soaking the air filter element and "poof" it lit off when I can the a stop sign. Made the turn into our neighborhood and could tell in about 10 seconds that something wasn't right. Luckily caught it before if did more damage, like warping the hood. (scorched it, but didn't warp it)
Cheers, B2

I have more questions than answers.

The Carter and performer are the same carb, make by the same manufacturer and rebadged. Only difference is the performer is smog legal in CA and you pay a premium for that. Jet performance is a good vendor for the q-jet. You will need the adapter unless you switch to the offy manifold

Ordered a manual-adjust altitude compensation quadrajet 5 Mar 2025, $800 plus shipping. No core needed. Received 12 Apri 2025. Includes adapter baseplate to fit 289 Performer intake, gaskets, AC solenoid and engine run/tuning to Bronco at 900 ft elevation in Arizona prior to shipment. Paid $375 deposit on that date.

That is exactly what I have, flawless operation to date. Why he is not charging way more, I guess he is a great guy, and is.

That’s what I think now that I’ve seen what plain jane Autolite 4100’s go for: $750
