When installing the transmission, how do you make sure that the TC doesn't disengage from the pump when pulling it forward onto the flexplate? (this is when the bell housing is already mounted against the engine block)

TCI states that you should have 1 1/8" inch between the bell housing edge and the torque converter pad where the flexplate mounts. The measurement is suppose to let you know when the pump is fully engaged by the torque converter.

What's the corresponding measurement between the block face and flexplate surface where the TC mounts?

Or, what's the measurement between the torque converter's pads where the flexplate sits and the flexplate when the torque converter is all the way pushed into the bell housing?

Since I just spun my oil pump bushing using a new flexplate & torque converter, I'd like to eliminate the possibility that the flexplate is too far away from the torque converter - causing the TC to pull forward too far.

Thanks!
Chris

If you have the correct converter, flexplate and bellhousing it can't pull out of the pump. I'd estimate the block plate to converter mounting distance is about 3/4". The pump gear has about 1/2" of engagement when mounted properly.

On paper everything is correct.

The big question mark was the torque converter (Dacco F48), which I've already returned. The replacement F48 is different - has "nubs" on the body & rattles when shook. The previous had a smooth body and no rattles, not sure if the stator was stuck in it.

The flexplate is a Summit unit, which says C6/C4 in the applications list.

Given transmission fluid leaked out of the front seal, I imagine the pump was spinning fine-along with the bushing. However, I just want to make sure-my lack of technical terminology makes it hard searching for the measurements.

C4/AOD/4R70W flexplates do have a different offset than C6/E4OD flexplates. That one would make me very nervous. Get this flexplate and all will be well. http://www.bulkpart.com/2/product/F200.html

Do you know a west coast distributor for the above flexplate?

Will it fit on the Dacco F48? I had a hell of a time with Pioneer FRA205 flexplates that wouldn't fit on the F48. The bolt pattern on the F48 was slightly larger than that of the FRA205 flexplates...I went through three Dacco F48 torque converters and two FRA205 flexplates - and decided that they were incompatible (despite what Autozone thinks).

edit: Eh, looks like you've confirmed that before. I even mention it here:

It's most likely a Transtar Industries part. They have locations in San Jose and San Leandro. I've never had a fitment problem with those flexplates and I've bought a bunch.

I'll call around tomorrow to see if the local parts houses can get it, or if I can get it direct from Transtar.

I'll also test fit my existing set up, seems "You should have between 1/8" to 3/16" of clearance between the torque converter and flexplate before pulling the converter forward and bolting it to the flexplate." would enable me to check the clearance - although the first time I definitely pulled the TC more than 1/4" forward.

I sent a question to Summit about their flexplate, telling them C4 & C6 used different flexplates & what application is their flexplate for.

Gave in and purchased the Transtar F200 flexplate. While the nice SFI approved, gold irridite Summit flexplate is probably fine, I don't want to pull things apart again if it's not.

20 minute drive to a world wide purveyor of fine transmission trinkets. I was surprised they (Transtar) sells to the general public.

Curb appeal leaves something to desired though.
