How many of you have changed over to a floor shifter and been irritated by the nub left on the collar? I have. I've hidden it with a tach, replaced it with a smooth collar from a Mustang (expensive and hard to find anymore) or just ignored and lived with it. But I decided I did not want to hide it or live with it on my 72 Patina build. So here is what I did to modify the original 3-on-the-tree collar.

First, here is the eyesore.

Since you can't weld pot metal I decided to cut off the nub and fill the resulting hole. I used a 3-inch cut off wheel to remove it.

I then ground it down smooth and used a step drill to clean up the edges of the hole.

The hole goes all the way through and I found a penny to be the perfect size to fill the hole and create a bottom for the fill.

It drove in nicely with a punch.

I guess I did "weld" it.

Then some bondo filler to smooth it out.

Nice work on that one! And I thought pennies where all but worthless these days.

Here it is painted. Black primer, Black Pearl paint and 3 coats of matte clear.

What awesome timing! I cut mine off about 6 months ago and I’ve been procrastinating on filling it with some kind of epoxy. I looked at it today and told myself I need to work on this tomorrow.

Nice work! I did one years ago and filled it with JB Weld and a little bondo.

Good job, and good idea. I cut it off and stuck a rubber plug in it after painting.

Nice work Scoop!

Yes, I moved my last one to the floor and was irritated at the nub on the collar. I just cut it off flush with a sawzall and glued a plastic cap over the hole. Your result is much nicer!

Nice work! Seems like a good approach and came out looking clean.

Sorry to stray, but I noticed you have a Hobart 140 welder. How do you like it? I’m thinking about getting that one for my first welder.

I love the Hobart but it's a 210. It can use both 220V and 110V. But the 140 would be great starter welder especially for sheet metal work.
