Knowing what a single sniper is like without the progressive linkage, a dual quad setup without a progressive linkage would be nothing except an on/off switch for the throttle on t the street.
first of all there is a computer system running the injectors so it is a little better than that. tuning is the key. but regardless of any negative comments from people who have never driven one, it runs amazing. it has great power off idle, no stumble and pulls hard all the way up to 6,000 which is as high as I have revved it, also, I did quite a bit of reading on this after I bought it to help with the install, and most of the people I talked to recommended the simple throttle rod extension over the progressive linkage on the 408, and it made a big difference in drive-ability. https://forums.holley.com/forum/hol...ressive-linkage-or-throttle-extension-or-both and I bought it because it looks cool to me. https://www.holley.com/products/fue...ems/sniper_efi_service_components/parts/20-16

Didn’t think that was meant as a negative comment at all. Just a supposition based on his, and many others experience with the single.
In fact, we’ve run through the progressive part on the single set up quite a bit. Personally, I would’ve thought that running duels would have subdued that overly quick off idle reaction. But I don’t have any experience with dual anything on a V8. Just flat sixes, and that doesn’t count! Besides, they had progressive linkage.

But apparently your linkage was modified. Was it to subdue this reaction, or to improve some other aspect?
Can you describe your extended rod for us? Or is it all in those links you posted?
(never mind. I just read the title!)🙄

you are probably right. but yes the throttle extension adds a bit of mechanical advantage to the throttle linkage and reduces the quick off idle response, it also makes the throttle a lot less stiff, the added benefit is you do not have to adjust anything in the fuel tables because it doesn't change the setup the computer is designed to run with. it is a simple 2 screw addition that makes a big difference. I added a second one to the rear throttle body for the cruise control anchor and that smoothed out that as well. https://www.holley.com/products/fue...ems/sniper_efi_service_components/parts/20-16 this is the link to holleys website. it is 20 dollars, a minor investment for how much it helps. the other link is to one of the many discussion boards I read before I decided to buy it. it really does help a lot. anyone with a sniper should try IMHO.

A bit off topic....sorry...

Does the Sniper Stealth have the same linkage issues? I know they added the kick down provision. My next project is to add Stealth to my 69 Mach 1 I was hoping to not have to modify the linkage.

I would like to go Edelbrock Pro-Flo 4 EFI on my FE....but there are some issues with that system for the FE series engines and cost is 3K plus.....

The old ODB1 EEC-IV SEFI from mid 80's Econolines, Crown Vics and other non-HO 5.0 engines are a reliable and easy to afford setup. The harnesses are not too hard to modify, I've done dozens of them over the years. Replacement parts are easily sourced at any AutoZone or similar. Performance-wise It's a step down from the 86-93 Mustang setup, but if you're running a stock 302 and on a budget then I would take a close look at these. You can find them in Speed Density or MAF depending on the year and the donor car, and there's a lot of info on the conversion online.
Good Luck!

I am a big fan of the Holley Terminator X systems. Very easy set up and tuning.

I'm fan of the mustang EFI, problem is finding a good computer these days.

If I was to start over, I would do the explorer and work with EFI guy. Also, while the AOD is fine the electronic versions/newer tranny is the 4r70w and if you are running the explorer EFI computer then it will run the 4r70w.

Ive also liked the idea that I can pick up parts at any parts store. Too, barring the computer tanks, you can run along pretty well with most of the sensors crapping out.
I would hate to be on the side of road or in the out back and have an aftermarket part be unavailable.

I’m running 99 explorer efi on my 66. Rotating assembly is from a 94 f150 I paid $350 for the whole truck running with a 4r70w trans. Efi guy did the ecm flash and my son redid the explorer harness by following efi guys YouTube videos. I’m running a small comp cam with long tubes along with the 4r70w and I love it. Ford Efi is the way to go in my opinion because of the availability of parts at any parts store.

Did you have to redo your drive shafts and do you have a body lift ? Thanks

I actually bought new tom woods driveshafts because mine were wore slap out. If I remember right the 4r70 adds like 1” of length over the c4. So If you are running a lift with a stock drivshaft I’d say you might be good. I ran a stock driveshaft for years with a c4 and a 3.5” lift but didn’t do any stuff like rock crawling.
I installed 1”
Body lift when I was doing all
My sheet metal replacement and body work. The 4r70 fits really good with the body lift and it’s really not noticeable but I really don’t think it’s necessary. Someone Else may know better about that then me.

I like my factory 2000 explorer FI with Garry’s harness. Returnless pump (supply line only). I use forescan lite and can see live data on motor and trans. Trans is 4r70w that came with the donor vehicle. Tons of support on this forum. Here is what you have to consider: budget, high hp (more tuning) vs less hp (no tuning). Application aka type use. My vehicle is built to drive and enjoy (stock explorer 270 hp and 300 torque, numbers off of the top of my head). You can go bigger with factory but it will take tuning. Tell us about you rig and intended use. It all Snowballs. Best advice I can give you is read up on this forum, make a plan and stick to it. The guys on this forum will help you.
Original 1973 Explorer 302 with a two barrel setup right now. Original transmission. Most everything is original on this one but headers and duel exhaust. Sat up for a few years before my dad passed and hasn't run well since. Fuel can is gone though, removed many years ago. Will mostly be just cruising for the sheer joy of driving it but may do some light trail with a little mud here and there because it's seen it's share in the past. I've fought with carbs until I'm beat down trying to figure out tuning them, it's either too much fuel or not enough. I admit, I'm carb dumb! I'm an electronics guy, used to EFI but no pro. I've got to get this thing moving before I talk myself into selling it. Learned to drive in it when I was kid. Wasn't sure about fuel return/tank etc. was leaning Sniper because it looked pretty easy really, but listening to you guys. I rerouted my fuel lines to outside of frame rails already due to heat issues from exhaust. Been running a Carter pump. Old 2.5/3 inch lift with bigger tires.

Find you a running explorer 99-01 preferably, and adopt everything. I think returnless started in 99. I bought a tank from aero I think, that takes the stock explorer pump. Ran a supply and done, really clean option. Add the comp cam 349-8 if you want a little extra umph.
