My gauge reads full with only a half of a tank should I bend the float rod down some.

Stock tank and sender? Or aftermarket?
Do the oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges read high by any chance?

Is the bronco new to you, or have you had it for a time? If the latter, did it just start reading off, or has it done it all along?
And have you driven it enough to know how it acts as the tank goes empty?

What does it read with an empty tank?

We don't have enough information from you at the moment to tell you what the problem is, thus we can't say how to fix it. But bending the float down is probably going to make things much worse.
