Gas in oil, bad fuel pump-what next?

I have a 200 engine in 66. Fuel pump went bad, so I replaced it, and the tank, all new lines, filters etc. soaked the carb and put a rebuild kit in it. Cleaning, rebuilding the carb helped a ton.

Drained the oil, it smelled a bit like gas-I heard this could happen on this forum.
So I changed it, got it running and it has developed a valve tapping sound. I havent run it much, but could the gas in oil damaged something? The head on this engine was redone 3+ yrs ago, hasnt had many miles cuz its been at the body shop.

Should I try to adjust the valves (chiltons doesnt help much at all) to make the sound quit? Or look for damage? Not sure what to do next. This is a perfect example how one thing snowballs...Im sure you guys have experienced that dejavu!

I really appreciate the help.

If it were mine I'd drive it softly for a couple hundred miles and see if it cleared up. If you are comfortable dropping the pan and checking the rod bearings for damage that would not be a bad idea. If you adjust the valves now and the lifters clear up the valves may end up to tight. 30 or 40 years ago most all Fords with many miles on them had some degree of valve train noise. Its not mine so maybe someone with better info than mine will chime in soon.

I think it has solid lifters-not sure-going to open it up tonight. Thing is, it didn't make a valve tapping sound before all this happened. It has never run this well, and been able to run it without the choke pulled out due to gunned up carb.

I thought for sure when I changed the oil it would clear up. Maybe I should run/drive it a bit to see. I don't know much about valves, didn't want to hurt it. Thanks for the help
