So... mystery solved, I think.
The wonderful Advance Auto Pads have (had) two metal titties on the backing plate - one of them was peened over to hold a wear indicator. the other was not peened over (and taller). A little work with the flap wheel grinder and they were both ground flat -and the wear indicator removed. Those bumps were keeping the rear pad from slipping down between the rotor and the caliper bracket - and into the caliper.
That's as far as i got before dark - hopefully everything works when I actually get the system bled and pressurized.
So I guess those newer caliper brackets do work for the Ch*vy disc conversion - if you have the right pads.
