Hazard lights

So I have a 76 and the hazard switch in the dash.

The only way the hazards work is if I pull the switch and then turn on a directional . Is this right ?

Everything else works prefect,

Of course not. But we need a LOT more information about the truck. Tell us everything you know about it; everything you can see; photos are best. Too much info is better than too little. Start a registry on SMN and create an album to upload pics & videos.

Everything electrically works, but the emergency flasher only works if I pull the switch and then use the left right directional. Don't know what else you wanna know. Flashers are fine dash lights and all lights work like they are supposed too

First of all, a '76 should have the hazard switch on the column not the dash. Maybe the dash has been changed or maybe the older switch was installed because the column mounted one quit working. Who knows.

The problem you see is because the hazard flasher isn't working. The hazard switch is connecting all the lights together but isn't sending pulses of current through to light them. When you turn on a turn signal you are providing an alternate source of pulsed current to make them work. Look to see if the hazard flasher is installed and see if it has 12V on one of the terminals. Both flashers are within 6" of each other near the steering column. The turn signal flasher has a light blue connector. Hazard flasher connector is black. You might try swapping the flasher to see if you have a bad one.

If the hazards still don't work (no 12V) check fuse #5.

thanks for the help, i will try that.

my bronco vin that is attached to the glove box says i am a 76 but i have to do some more research since i have my doubts it is a 76, the colum does not have a hazard switch there. the title says 76 but i have to find the vin on the frame, the frame is undercoated so it is hard to find it. maybe the body was swapped out. my vin also says the black was the color, but my body green under the dash.

i was under the dash the other day and saw 2 flashers. i will mark and swap and see what happens.

Yeah, lots of Franken-Broncos running around these days. Lots of rust led to lots of swaps of just about everything.

If the dash has light-bars underneath the controls, then it's approximately a '73 or newer dash. With the hazard switch there (assuming it's a factory install), then it's only up to a mid-'74 dash. Since you do not have the switch on the column, then I'd say it's limited to up to very early '74, or maybe late-'73.
For a short time during the transition in '74, Ford actually installed hazard switches both on the column and the dash. Typical Bronco yearly transition stuff.

Do you know where the frame VIN's are located? I only remember the one on the passenger side front, near the charcoal canister (is that still there?), but there are either one or two more scattered around the frame.
I'd normally say just grind off the coating near the spot you think it might be, but those numbers are very often extremely shallow stampings, and might wipe right off if you get too aggressive with the grinder.

And speaking of Franken-Broncos, maybe a few other things to look for. For instance, a '76 would have had disc brakes in the front, a proportioning valve on the frame (instead of the simple H-block), and the "inverted-Y" steering linkage.
Would also have had a slightly different parking brake setup.
Oh, and on that year model too, the charcoal canister would have been moved up to the firewall on the passenger side. Not the tin-can style that was mounted to the frame on mid-'70 to '75 models.

i have discs up front, but po put in a new power brake system, proportion valve is mounted near the manifold. my steering does not appear to be the y style. steering box is mounted outside of the frame and has a pitman arm to straight link to sprindle and straight tie rod.

i have a good feeling my bronco is a frankinstein like you said.

i have some pics, i will put them up here soon.

Fixed the problem today

Simple cleaning of the fuse panel, was not getting a full 12v so I cleaned the terminals and now she is all set.

Great news. Cleaning/checking the fuse panel is one of those things we should have put up on a "if you just bought a Bronco" sticky thread years ago.
Along with "replace your rear wheel bearings", "PO's (previous owners) are NOT electricians!", "pull for heat" and a few other gems of wisdom pertaining to EB ownership.

Glad you found yours. Now on to the next!;)
