So, I managed to extract the needle bearing leaving the race still in the crank. Unfortunately there is no reliefs cut into the back side of the race (like my new NAPA bearing) to pull with a puller. Has anyone had a similar situation, and if so did you mange to get the race out ? Let me know how you did it !! Thanks!

look up the bread and air trick on youtube, they pack it with bread and then hit with an air tool pushes it out

Thanks Nyles. learn something new everyday. I knew of the grease trick but that only worked to get grease all over me.

I used the grease method successfully, but the bread sounds a lot cleaner...!

Since all you have left is the outer race/shell, you may have to drive it in and collapse the side inwards with a punch or chisel to relive the tension holding it.

Funny! Yea, I'm gonna try bread next time! I have to imagine cleaning bread off the crank will be a lot easier too.

Does it matter what kind of bread? ;D
I've heard chevys prefer the crust to be removed.

Seems odd that the bread trick will work on just the race ??? Have you tried this method on just a race ?? Thanks

Did the bread trick with a rubber mallet and 1/2" extension that just fit inside the bearing. The race holds the needles in place with grooved lips fore and aft. When pushing (with bread) or pulling with a puller the jaws grab the race, not the needles in the bearing.

Bread is much cleaner than grease!

My needle bearing pulled out from the race!!! Only left with the race, cant see how the hydraulic method will work ! Has anyone used a carbide cutter and a chisel like suggested on a Google search ? Thanks !

The race should have a lip in the back that will work with the bread. Did the needles come out in a pile or were they still contained in something?

When you pack that bread in there its supposed to act like a mushroom(imagine your pushing from the stem end) (or even imagine a bullet going in and expanding) as the bread is forced in it mushrooms out between the race and crank (and we know the crank aint gonna move) So only thing left is the race to be pushed back.

Whatever you use to pack the bread with needs to barely fit inside the race.

the ones I just looked up have two slots across the rear the bread will work, or might could hook and pull?

Hook and pull

If you had the right puller it would work. An aircraft maintenance shop I used to work at had a snap-on puller that was small enough to do the job, but kinda rare and definitely pricey. Maybe O'Reilly's or one of the other stores that let you 'rent' tools would have something?
