Hi all,
New to me 66 Bronco. I was changing the gasket on the inspection plate (large rectangular one) and when I pulled the plate this metal rod was sitting on the plate.

It's about 1 and 3/8 inches long and about 1/2 diameter.

I don't know exactly what it is or where it goes. Any help is much appreciated. Having trouble trying to figure out how to post a picture of it.

sounds like the pill that goes between the shift rods in the case. There is no way it can come out and fall into the inside of the case. Someone had to of left it in there bu mistake. imagine that? If it is shifting correctly leave it out and put the cover back on and go like hell.

I appreciate the replies! It is flat on both ends. I put the cover back on without finding where the mystery piece goes and both the transmission and transfer case are working just fine.

I was googling the roller bearings and it does look like it could be one of those. Guess I will have to take it apart to check it out.

There should be nothing in the transfer case fitting what you described. (It's about 1 and 3/8 inches long and about 1/2 diameter. It is flat on both ends.)
