Help removing NP435 shifter

Installing a Gear Banger, trying to remove shifter. Says push down and turn. Tried this few times and it won't pop out. Pushed down where slot is, where screwdriver is pointing and turned, almost all the way . Stopped along way and it wouldn't come out. What am I missing?
Saw on one video and he turned it about 1/4 turn and it popped out
