Was the Bronco driver the one that died?

By the looks of the truck I would assume that was the fatality. At the very bottom left of roof and tailgate there is a car seat, I would assume that the child was in the Bronco as well. This sucks, you just never know when it's gonna happen.

I heard the bronco driver was not the fatality, but not sure if there was a passenger.

Looking at the Bronco I see the front axle folded under, tells me the Honda got the worst of the accident. Either way, it is sad that there was a fatality. Again my prayers are with all involved. I only hope that we as a community can find out what caused the Bronco to lose control. Could be helpful for each of us.

+1 I'm not going to make assumptions, but it would be smart for us to eye each others rigs for possible safety issues at shows & events. Between shotty restorations, substandard repairs, oversize tires and lifting these things up, the potential for an issue is amplified. Sometimes another person will see an issue that you you don't. Take any advice when it relates to safety.

I think a sticky thread where people can post what failed in accidents would save a lot of lives. I am sure if we knew the make of the roll bar, anyone on the site running them would be investigation a replacement system. Unfortunately sometimes that kind of knowledge comes too late. I have 4 kids so I tend to overkill the safety features in my truck. But I would sure be grateful if someone told me one of the components in my trucks failed in their experience. I have 20 people praying for that baby, I can't stand it when it is a kid.

Oh wow, that's ugly. Just turns my stomach especially due to the fatality and little one. Speaking of little ones, I have a couple, and now I'm thinking about a cage welded to the frame, not an expert but would that have helped?

In my opinion floor bars are stronger than frame tie-ins. Double B pillar would have helped too.

Reading the comments on the news article some are saying as bad as the Bronco was damaged, the Honda was in much worse shape.

I was there right as all the emergency vehicles were arriving. I saw one of the vehicles, so much worse than the photos show - I've never seen anything so crushed, destroyed... It was sickening and sad to see. I couldn't imagine how anyone survived any of it. My heart hurts for the families of those involved.

And another stated the person in the Bronco was not the one killed.

This accident is at the end of my street and it isn't good. Reports of a missing dog from one of the vehicles as well, please keep an eye out for it so as to no cause another accident. Road is shut down from McFadden to Argosy. The person killed was not in the orange Bronco you see. They are still waiting for the coroner to come from Santa Ana. :( VERY SAD.

Sounds like it was a head on collision with the Bronco departing it's lane and entering on coming traffic. From the looks of the pics (front axle folded under, hood bent back over windshield) seems the EB must have gone end over end. Not sure a cage of any quality is going to help there. Tragic.

It has a Stroppe rollbar in it.

But who gives a shit if it was a Baja, somebody died!
I know, it's a shame to lose a rare truck, but I'm really feeling bad for the person that lost their life.

Sorry, I'm kind of sensitive to the subject, my brother was killed in his Bronco about 35 years ago in Baja.

I'm sorry if you took it that I was more involved with finding out about the BAJA....,But at the time Andrew had not chimed in and I just didn't want to come out and ask had anybody heard from him..or anybody on here for that matter...Thats all I was just try to come up with....Any fatal wreck is one too many...

Sorry about your brother....I have lost peeps to and a very very close friend whom I grew up with....he flipped 3 and the 3rd one got him...

praying for all parties...Gene

That's what I was driving at as well. The Bronco is nothing compared to the life of a human being.

I too am sorry for the loss of your brother, Ovalis.

Seeing this is probably a reminder for all of us all that accidents can happen. Precautions can certainly help:

1. As has already been mentioned, take the time to give your Bronco (or any vehicle) a frequent once-over. Tire pressure, all the hardware underneath, etc. Hear a funny noise? DON'T ignore it! I once did that once an old Chevy Impala, and it turned out to be a ball joint that was failing. It finally collapsed while making a city street u-turn at low speeds, so I was lucky. Could have been much worse.

2. Take a defensive driving course. Yes, I know, we're all awesome drivers, and it's all those OTHER people on the road that are the problem. But seriously, have you had any instruction beyond the stuff you took as a teenager to pass your DMV test at age 16? I took an advanced car control course about ten years ago, and I'm due for another one. (I made my wife and stepson do it a few years ago.) Not a racing school, but emergency maneuvers, skid recovery, etc. Bad habits and complacency add up over time. Some local law enforcement agencies offer these to the community for a nominal fee if there's not a professional school near you.

3. Put down the stupid phone. Seriously. Especially if you're going to be driving something with the not-exactly-precise steering of an Early Bronco, you really need to keep both hands on the wheel, and both eyes out for trouble. It's an epidemic here in SoCal, just as it is elsewhere. But I really shake my head when I see some guy at the wheel of a lifted vintage 4x4 (we not only have a lot of Broncos around here, but a fair number of Land Cruisers, Jeeps and Scouts), phone cradled against shoulder, torso leaned up against door, one wrist flopped casually over the top of the steering wheel, all while flying down the freeway at 70 or on a surface street at 50. Keep the phone out of reach; you can always call or text someone back later.
