Hydroboost or vacuum booster?

Just bought an EB as a family cruiser. Has power steering but no power brakes. Wife doesn't feel comfortable driving it with current brakes. Going to upgrade. Looking for advice whether to put in a vacuum booster or a Hydroboost? Not taking it off-road...at least not this one....just used for driving around town on nice days. Thank you for the help.

Hydro for 100% on street Bronco with carb and disc brakes. It's a great choice. I would not recommend it for any off-road driving; hydro, disc, and carb combo. With EFi it's great. I would rather have non-power assisted disc and carb for off-roading. Especially, if the wife is driving it or having my family in the Bronco. Just my opinion. Others will have a different opinion. Be safe and have fun.

Hydro

I asked the garage I am taking it to about hydro and he told me I may not like it? Any particular reason? Don't think I have ever driven something with Hydroboost or didn't know it at the time.

Also to answer the question....disc brakes on front and drums in rear.

Thank you again for input. It is appreciated. Just joined this forum and it has been a huge help.

My buddy has the WH hydro boost kit.
Yes wicked expensive but it came with every damn thing he could need.
He had a hard time at first. He went from shitty 4 wheel drum to HB 4 wheel disc, so it was dramatic.
We both love it now. Just had to get used to it.

Big tires and a lot of weight help. But if you are light and only running 32's or 33's then it may feel a little sensitive until you get used to it.
Detroit locker was the same way....after awhile you get used to it and don't even notice it anymore.

I put hydroboost on my stock '68 Bronco. No lift, uncut, stock size tires. It stops better than my modern daily driver. I just barely tap on the brakes and it stops amazingly. It does give a very strong power boost and takes some getting used to. I can see why some people may not like it.

I'm in the process of going to hydro boost brakes... do most of you do the astrovan upgrade? If so what year? Or do the wild horses upgrade? WH kit is so expensive. Or another already designed kit? If so what other kits are out there?

I'm running 31's and since it's uncut I'll maybe only go to 33's.

You'd have to ask the shop that question. But I'd bet it had to do with what the others are saying as well. That it's hyper-sensitive compared to a standard manual brake setup. Or in the case of Broncos, even the vacuum brakes, which due to the small booster no doubt, were not that big of an improvement.
Well, I personally think that the original factory boosters had some good boost, where the aftermarket ones we have available to us now (even through us) are not offering quite as much boost as originals. Yes, you can feel the improvement, but not as much as with hyrdro-boost from all reports.

While I'm on the hydro bandwagon then, do you know for sure that your current setup is optimized? Maybe you're in need of some boost, but maybe you're not getting the full potential of the manual ones yet.
A lot of that would depend on which brakes were installed, how well they were installed, and what master cylinder was used. And ultimately, what tire size as someone said.
If all stock-ish, then you're probably correct in that they're about as good as they're going to be without assistance. But if any of the installation was sub-correct, you might be fighting some unnecessary battles.

Then again, we should ask what size tire you have?;) What year Bronco, and if lifted, how much?
Anything 33" and above can definitely benefit from some boostage.

Good luck. And welcome to classicbroncos too!

Answers to Dirtdonks question. Have a 75 bronco wth a 1" body lift with stock tires. The MC is leaking a little and will be replaced too. Thanks again everyone for input.

Whatever booster you can find at the junkyard is going to run the same price. They all use the same pumps, for the most part can use the same master cylinders, and with making your own lines, pretty much all of the fittings are the same price (different boosters use different fittings). With junkyard parts I did my conversion for $250. Significantly less than a kit from the vendors. Making the custom lines was the most expensive part of that.

If your wife doesn't like manual brakes because they're not sensitive enough,
she probably won't like hydroboost as they would be too sensitive
(think emergency braking, stomping on the pedal). Middle of the road would be a booster setup.

EDIT: Lots of brake threads lately.

I don't have experience with hydroboost. I chose a vacuum boost system based on price and have been happy with it. The brakes aren't phenomenal, but they are certainly good. Would hydro be better? Maybe. But I'm in no hurry to spend more money. (33" tires by the way)

After doing hydroboost I had a learning curve to adjust. Let a friend drive who had never driven any bronco ever. He didn't think the brakes were touchy. They just felt like good brakes to him.

It isn't that hydroboost is touchy, it is just that your reference point has been dulled by not having hydroboost.

I agree with brincobowsher

Your stated concern was that your wife didn't feel comfortable with the current brake system.

I have a 77 that I converted from stock booster to hudroboost and it is still by far the best upgrade I ever did.

It's like having modern brakes on old iron.

Hydroboost!! When I first did mine astro van hydroboost I used the astro van master cylinder and it was very very sensitive... I've since switched to a late 70's Corvette Master and it stops amazing while also having great pedal feel. It stops way better then my 2015 ford fusion..I've got disk up front,11" drums in rear with prortionating value to regulate flow

Hydroboost. Best upgrade so far.

A properly paired MC will produce good feel. 1-1/8" bore with discs feels good. Stock 1" bore feels touchy to most folks.
