I doubt is a vacuum advance issue. Vacuum advance one isnt working at idle speed and once you open the throttle vacuum goes away during acceleration and during higher load conditions such as pulling a hill. Vacuum advance is realy only for better part throttle cruising.I'd say it sounds like its runnig to lean either due to a vacuum leak could be internal and undetectable or the carb is jetted way to lean. What color are the spark plug insulators?

Crap. Now I've got to hook my vac gauge to ported vac and watch it. I thought advancing timing under load was it's purpose. Older I get the dumber I get. Getting time to hang up my tools.

oh dont do that! ya learn something new everyday!!!
how much is a calibration kit??
is it just the metering rods and jets?

There are different ones. The one I bought was $40 and NAPA had it in stock. It has 3 sets of jets, 3 sets of rods, and 4? Sets of springs. I like the idea of having it because when I go on trips to different elevations, I can change a rod while filling up at the gas station.

The weird thing about your situation is that it worked fine, then crapped out. That suggests that the jetting was fine at one point. Did you move? Did you buy the truck from a different elevation? Did the problem start when the weather turned colder?

i believe its happeneing with the coil , but i dont think it would cause the gap in throttle would it??

Here's something you could try. Move the accelerator pump linkage to the top hole on the pump. This will give you the quickest fuel squirt. If this makes it run better, jets/rod would be the next step IMO.

Theres a spec for the pump. I can't remember for sure, but I think it's 13/16" from the carb to the top of the plunger.

A bad coil will make the engine weak and spudder at higher RPM's. A bad coil usually leads to weak spark. Refer to Viperwolf's specs for the coil above.

You might try RG801's advice first just to see...

X2 on the calibration kit. I had that carb before I went EFI and the kit is very helpful to have around. I used to go back and forth between Colorado and California so I would make changes accordingly for elevation. The kit comes with a book that helps you get it set up properly. I think I paid $25-30 for the kit but it was a lot of years ago so its probably more now.

Do you have dual tanks? Does it do it no matter which tank you're running on?
Is it crapping out on light (no heavy load ie. a steep hill) acceleration as well?
Runs good at a steady cruise?
The reason I'm asking all of these seemingly stupid questions is because my old 302 behaved this way (had an Edelbrock 1405) then, I noticed it only did it when running on the aux tank;)
Turns out the fuel pick up filter "sock" fell apart (remember our rigs are getting pretty old) and was causing a restriction so that the pump couldn't keep up with the motor's demand for fuel during a good load but, enough for light to no load driving.
I looked everywhere for the debris, finally took my selector valve apart and found the problem.
Maybe...........?:?------Hans

White plugs means lean you need more fuel only jetting will do it. If the coil was acting up then the plugs would be black due them not firing.
It is kind of weird that a 1406 would be to lean for a 302. I played around with one on mine and had to go 4 steps leaner to get it jetted right. you may want to check the numbers stamped on the jets and rods maybe they've been changed in the past. but still it is a good idea to get a jetting kit. You may need to change out the step up springs which reminds me the way edelbrocks are setup its easy for dirt to enter the step up spring/piston area and jam it up which may cause the rods to stay stuck down in the jets which would cause a lean condition.

engine was running fine. it just happened all at once

If it was running fine with the carb set up the way it is now, you shouldnt need to re jet it unless you changed elevation. Debris in the fuel system could be a likely candidate. Are you using the mechanical fuel pump?

Adjusting an eldebrock
1. Take top off carb and check how much gas is in the bowls if low floats need adjusting.
2. To adjust these carbs, set idle up high, adjust front screw on driver side by backing it out, then screw it until it rough idle then back out just a little to smooth out.
3. Adjust the screw on passenger side by backing it out then in until rough, then back out until smooth usually not very far.
4. Once its running smooth then you can back the idle down where you want it.

This is how I had to adjust mine, when i fix some other problems I will do what a lot of my buddies said to do and throw away and by a holley.

A key piece of info. Possibly a leak in the fuel line and sucking air. I' would pressure test the line.
