Let the new dash rebuild begin - Update with a couple questions???

Okay...it is coming along really well but I had a couple of questions.

First: What have people used to block the air intake hole on the passenger side floor area when they remove their heating system?

Second: I removed the clutch pedal (the car is currently an automatic but the PO did not remove the clutch pedal when he converted it to an auto) and I noticed that the "sleeve" that goes around the pin that holds the brake/clutch pedal is too short now. Do I even need the "sleeve" or if I do where can I get one that is about 2 inches longer.

Thanks for the help and I will be posting new pics tonight.

Here are some updated photos of the progress

Matt

It is time for the new dash and complete (whole truck) rewire to begin.

I think everyone will like it when it is done.

I do have a question about some rust I found...under the gas pedal I found a small spot of cancer. What can I do to prevent having to cut it out. I am not looking for a temporary cure but I don't want to start cutting out every little spot that has some rust.

Thanks for the help

First.....Good luck on what you started...I am getting ready to do the same.

As far as the rust goes, if it is surface rust I would sand it off and then put POR-15 on it. That stuff will stop the rust from spreading. You will want to buy some metal prep as well to apply before you use the POR-15. I have used it and am very impressed so far.;D

I know the p 15 product works well...but will it really stop the spread of the surface rust???

thanks and let's compare notes and ideas on the perfect dash. I have some really nice ideas for a perfect dash.

Rust

A guy I know who is a professional painter told me to sandblast any rust I come across. This will take it down to bare metal, then use an etching primer, followed by a regular primer, followed by a good coat of acrylic enamel paint. Make sure all of your paints are compatible with each other. The above would be for surface rust. If it has rusted through, he recommends cutting it out and rewelding but I am trying a fiberglass bondo to see if that will do the trick first. I bought a cheap sandblasting tool made by Husky for around 12 bucks. A bag of "Play Sand" cost about 5 bucks. Be sure to screen the "play sand" to get out some of the larger pieces and any lumps. You are gonna hate sandblasting in that spot but just imagine you are on a tropical beach and the wind is blowing 60 mph and wear goggles. I'm no expert just tellin ya what I have been told. The POR-15 sounds alot easier but I cannot attest to how well it works. Good luck with your project. Post some more pics when you finish. Hope this helps.

I plan on putting a grinding wheel to it to see how deep the rust realy is...thanks for for the info and tip.

Instead of a grinding wheel you might try a wire brush wheel for your grinder. Just a thought.

get the wire brush that is the "knotted" one. Last much longer and has a better bite.

MILLER LIGHT ALL THE WAY!!!

And yes I do think that if you cover the rust up with the POR-15 that it will also stop it from spreading from what you covered up!!

On the air intake on the pass side...I cut a round piece about 1" larger than the original hole. I then attached it with screws. If I EVER decided to put heater or AC back in...I just unscrew and away I go. I put a piece of weatherstripping on that 1" overlap.

Are you planning on a dash like mine? ( I remember from a different post) If so, be advised I hold the patton...J/K;D ;D ;D
Just a little note, if you are...I did not add to the original dash, I made a complete new one, that is taller, and the width is shorter to fit between the cage...See pics

I really like yor dash... I am using a much simplier approach do to lack of fabrication skills and time.

Does anyone have some input on the clutch pedal issue.

You won't need the spacer/bushing if all you are running is the auto pedal. On a related note, I need that spacer as I am going from an Auto to a ZF 5 speed. Let me know if you are willing to part with it.
