Looking at an M5OD-R2 this weekend

So I’m looking at a M5OD – R2 this weekend. It’s relatively cheap compared to what the junkyards have, and I realize it may need to be completely rebuilt. What do I look out for?
Slop, play, shift feel?
Any and all guidance is appreciated.

Make sure it's the right bell housing for what you plan to do.
4x4 trans not 2x4 as in it has the extension housing on the back to mount to T-case
The input shaft is going to wiggle Mine did.
Top cover with shifter in the rear is better. Fits the Bronco better
Shouldn't be leaking nut for maybe the top cover rubber plugs. You'll be replacing them with metal plugs before install so nothing to really worry about.
If it has fluid in it...Check it....see if it's burned or has metal in it. Drain plug should have magnet on the end. Some metal is common.

Really outside that it's a crap shoot as you don't know how it was treated over it's life. I pulled mine and got lucky. It has only a sight noise (bearings). Nothing really nothing noticeable so I just run it.....

Grab all the shifter parts....grab everything. Too much is not enough...LOL

Thanks guys! It's a 4X4 and has the tail housing extension. The shift rod is there as well, so that's a plus. It's dry on the outside, so no apparent leaks. I appreciate the tips Tim!

Picked up the transmission tonight! Super clean inside, shifts smooth, no real rough feel from cycling the gears, and I can’t wait to tear into it!!

What engine is that from, that you’re putting it on in your bronco?

make sure to drill out the holes to 7/16. Depending on the year of the transmission, it could have metric sized holes and your bellhousing bolts will not fit.

Now the fun begins....build your own crossmember or buy one? New driveshafts or modify existing? Watch the bank account go down lol.

I'll be building my own crossmember and going with new shafts...I've had this rig apart for about 16 years and to be honest, I have no idea if I saved the shafts or not...I'm going with not...

I have seen your build! That's great info! Thanks!!
