You should be able to get the lifter out without the tool when you get the intake off. Shouldnt be a problem. They dont cost much though.

You should be able to remove them by hand or with a pair of needle nose pliers

You can just bump the engine over and remove the lifter with your fingers when it rises on the lobe of the cam.

If the engine has a lot of miles on it..the lifters will not come out without a lifter puller. A lifter puller looks like a miniature slide hammer bearing puller with expanding jaws that engage the lock ring groove in the top of the lifter. Try to remove it by hand or by pliers first.

My Dad got in late last night and had to leave early this morning, but he wanted me to say thanks to all of you experts hepling me out, it's a learning experience for the both of us.

Now back on topic, I'm getting ready to remove the intake, anything else I should know before I jump in? I've read through the removal process in the manual multiple times.

You do not have to remove the dizzy. That will save you a step or two. Just a FYI in case you did not know.

couple of more things....Try not to let any dirt, grease, or grime fall down into the "valley". Also watch out for misc. parts like nuts and bolts from falling in too. Much easier said than done! I always manage to lose one or two of something and then panic thinking that they have fallen into the engine!

Mike sounds like your on the right track, when you do pull the lifter out if it has a rounded indention in then it's worn. The bad thing that I have ran into is if replacing lifters only that it will wear down the cam lobes fast.

Ok, so I've disconnected all of the hoses, and removed all of the bolts holding the intake on, and I can't get the darn thing off. I did not remove the carb as I didn't figure it was necessary, is this my problem? What's a good way to bust this thing loose without breaking something?

You'll need a healthy pry bar and some grunt to do that..and there are several pinch points between the intake and the block that serve the purpose of being fulcrums for the pry bar. Just make darned sure you have all the intake bolts out along each side.

Try pulling on thermostat housing if that don't work try to pry a flat head screwdiver between the block and intake just don't get too wild with it and try not to put gouges in it, if you do rtv and gaskets will fix it. The carb can stay on the intake. let us know if you have other questions, better to ask then mess something up.
Sounds like you are out for fall break;D

Alright I'm back ;D Ok, so I tried a little bit of prying and nothing. I left the throttle linkage bracket bolted on, is that ok? Also I just noticed a nut in the center of the intake in front of the carb, behind the dizzy with a wire running to it, does this have to be removed?

Pry harder. The only bolts holding that thing on are the ones along each side. Intake mannifolds can get good and stuck over time...

No as long as the linkage is disconnected you are fine, the nut can stay on the intake too. I think just the 12 intake bolts. Sometimes these are a real booger to pry loose. Once it is finally loose it will literally pop open if you are listening closely. ;)

Ok guys... got the intake off (was a PITA and I have two new cuts from it). So it is definitely indented but I'm having issues getting it out.
