New Paint on the '70

Hi,

I'm posting a few pics of the '70. (Actually the body is from a donor '72.)

I'm very pleased with the paint.

I'm very unpleased with the way the doors fit. (I'm not really sure what to do with the door fit at the moment. The PO of the '72 said that the body panels were welded properly. The painter thought he could work the metal to make it right. Not sure how much adjustment can be made with the doors. I've begun a search to see if anyone has a method for fixing this problem. I'd like it to be inexpensive; but, I doubt that will be the case. I'm not trying to point fingers, I just want to find a solution. I'll provide pics that are close-ups of the door fit if anyone is interested.)

Until I can put a plan together for the doors and metal, she'll be chilling in a storage unit.

Thanks,

Jeff

On the Passengers side: it looks like a small shim behind the bottom door hinge would raise the rear bottom up and make it fit nicely. May have to adjust the actual striker up a bit to match. Can't tell on the Drivers side from the pics. Post more if ya can. Love the paint color too:)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the compliments.

Yep... Grabber Blue on both the Bronco and the trailer. The trailer was painted when we ordered the trailer 1-1/2 years ago. The manufacturer (MacLander) said we could pick any color paint, and we were already planning this build, so... we went with Grabber Blue.

I'm posting more pics of the door fits.

Thanks again.

Jeff

Looks like the common problem of the bed sides sagging. Put a ratchet strap between the top of your bed sides right behind the doors and snug it up just a tad. It probably won't take much. Then recheck your door fitment. On the drivers side I would put a shim on the body mount under the floor pan or the body mount behind the seat. that should take care of the top of the door hitting the quarter panel. Once everything is adjusted properly install your roll bar (assuming you are installing a roll bar) and attach it to your newly adjusted bed sides. That should keep everything in check

Thanks for the advice. It makes sense.

I spoke to a local custom paint guy who said the same thing about possibly needing to adjust the body by shimming some of the mounts. I also didn't really consider how to adjust the rear quarters. Good advice.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,

Jeff

Right now its all close enough. things will look very different once you put door gaskets in there.

Jeff, it's going to look really nice. Love the color. What accent color are you planning?

The doors are always tough to get lined up. On my half cab the the passenger door lines up pretty good, but its real hard to open and shut!

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the compliment.

Black is the accent that I've been planning. Not sure if we'll get tired of it since it is one of the more popular accents; but, I guess I'm partial to it.

I had mentally written-off the door fit without body panel rework; but, after a couple of suggestions, maybe there's hope with finessing the present setup. We'll see.

Take Care,

Jeff

That rig looks great!!! I'm going with clarrance, put a floor jack with a 12" 2x4 standing up, place it near the body bolt behind the seat (with bolt loose) and ever so slightly eaze it up, you should see the top of the door opening get wider. Don't take much!! And a shim or washer should hold it. Did you put in new body bushings?? The ratchet from side to side should correct that.
A lot can change it you run a hardtop also.
Good luck!!

Hi Guys,

Thank you.

The body bushings looked to be in very good condition. I believe they were replaced by the previous owner.

This would be a lot easier to do without the new paint job. I'm looking for experience locally to at least help... the last thing I want to do is mess up the paint on the doors and the door openings by getting ahead of myself.

I'll keep you posted.

I think I'm the previous owner of that body! Jeff, the doors fit pretty well as I recall when I was assembling it. I do remember the top of the bed corners (top of tailgate) flaring out slightly. I was going to do as others suggested and pull it together and weld in tubular supports from the corners down to the bed at 45 degree angle. I did shim the body at a few of the bushing points to get the door gaps as close as I could. It didn't take much from what I recall, maybe a washer or two.

The paint looks great!

Hi Jeff, Looks awesome! I had some of the same problems with my doors, especially the passenger door because the right front of the truck had been pushed in, probably from a wreck. As suggested, we played around with shimming the body mounts and the door hinges and we have some pretty good lines now. I doubt they'll ever be perfect, but we are talking about Broncos here...;D

Good luck! I don't think it will be too bad getting it fixed. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
