Thanks

Awesom bumper and sweet arse ride.

Thanks, a lot of hours and money, but is coming together nicely.

I found a new problem, that I knew could get me, the AOD is not shifting into 3rd or od. also the front brakes are not applying as much as I expected.

I ordered a pressure gauge kit to check tv pressure and will decide weather to drop the valve body and check for stuck valves.:p

the front brakes are easier, the front rotors sat on rain for years and have deep rusting on them, I figured that driving would clean them, but the rears are clean now and the front are only 20%. I am going to but replacements and repack the front bearings while I am at it.

all in all, the ride felt solid and good, tight steering and light on the take off.

I still need to install the rear shocks, some welding and fabing due to the explorer disc conversion.:cool:

since I have disassembled the AOD 4 times and messed up a few threads, I decided to get a working one from a late 80's full size bronco, My friend mechanic will go to the pull yourself find one and deliver it to my house, I will put in a trans-go shift kit and hi rev governor as well as all the goodies from the 4rw and carefully assemble it, I will install a new front seal while I am there.

hopefully the AOD gods smile at me!

tested it and got some weir results on the TV test port, once it warmed and in in neutral, it idled at 0 psi and at .271" spacer at TV cable tip it read 35 psi, good. I test drove it around the neighborhood and stuck on second, I could get first by dropping it into low manually.

I am now looking for a transmission, we'll see if my prayers are answered soon. I found a complete aod from a 88 Bronco, with 30 day warranty for 400, but I really wan to use my 4r70w gear set, mechanical diode and my new bands and a servo, he will not warranty if I open to swap parts. so I continue my search.
I'll report back when I get one!

went to Pick yourself wrecking yard and got the guts from a mustang 2003 4r70w, am carefully assembling it, doing a few mods and hopping to re install on the 4th!!!
the stang was a 6 with 50k miles all parts and clutches in as new condition, but best of all I only had to remove the xmember and it was out, took me 20 minuted to gut it with my 18v dewalt drill!!! jajaja, am getting too good at diss-assembly, jut gotta get it right.

wsa going to re use the existing wide gears and mech diode, but since the steels on one clutch looked a little cooked and the frictions of another where loosing the paper, i figure the 2 overheats did a lot of damage.

now I have a complete trans, I am just re-using the belts and a servo.;)

Doing your own tranny work is impressive not too many people attempt it on their own. Bronco is looking good. Bet it feels good being that close to finished.

one of the top 5 reasons for Building the Bronco is that I built from the ground up a 76 ramcharger, 440, 1 ton axles, 38 mudders etc etc, I have rebuilt and upgraded 3 aod's, 1 aode, 3 727's 2 904's in the past, this one I messed up myself by doing too many things at once, the rebuild engine, efi and trans all at pone start-up, left the shifter valve dislodged and did all this damage! o well 2 out of 3 is not bad.:cool::cool:

I have really slowed down and done all the checks and triple checks on the Trans, I incorporated the mods Silverfox recommended and checked each and every valve on the VB, tedious YES, but want to make sure it works. If it does NOT, I will save my cash and either go with a Exploder EFI to control both trans and engine, and get a 4r70w or get the trans and controller!

put it back together and test drove, now it takes off in 1st, and shifts to second super fast, and seem to stay in second. I need to drive it in a straight away since I can not do 45 on my neighborhood streets. I will adjust the TV tomorrow and see if first gets longer.

BAD NEWS, SICK OF AOD!
adjusted TV cable and no luck, super short 1st and stays on 2nd.
changed 91 VB for 87 Bronco w/o any mods and added 3-4 accumulator.
still no 4rd and 4th, super short 1st and slow shift to second with tire chirp.

I am now starting my search for a 4r70w and controller, probably have to save a while since I already dropped $500 on this latest try!

a bit frustrated:p

let me know what year and model I can pull the 4r70w from that will bolt on to my 5.0l engine and mate to the NP 205 trans. I understand that one from a v6 ranger 4x4 will, I wan to avoid having to disassemble trans to change output shaft.

If you want to give the AOD another shot, have you considered having it gone thru by a pro transmission guy? There is a guy in Irvine, Ca by the name of Dana Sniff that is very good and reasonably priced. I'm pretty sure it's something that a pro will catch that us regular guys might miss. Last I talked to him a few weeks ago, he was looking for an AOD core, so who knows, he may work a partial trade for the AOD you pulled out in repairing the one in your Bronco. If you want his contact info, send me an email off list.

pulled my back after moving some furniture, taking meds and feeling a lot better now.

I am leaning towards a bad TQ on the AOD, This all started when I started the rebuilt engine, newly installed EFI and rebuilt AOD. I reved it to about 4k for 5 minutes and felt that the engine would start to bog down, so I gave it more gas to compensate, I stopped when the trans overheated. I let is cool down and did it again, I wanted to seat the new rings on the engine.

The second time the trans spewed fluid thru the top vent.

I drooped the pan and found that the gear selector valve was not lodged in the shift arm, I messed this up replacing the arm with one that point up. SO THE TRANS WAS IN DRIVE AND PARK AT THE SAME TIME, CAUSING OVERHEATING IN PARK.

I dropped trans and found the direct drum welded together. I replaced it and was happy to have no overheating in park, had reverse, neutral and drive. I finished quite a lot of more stuff on my restore and got the rear drive shaft and new tires to test drive.

I then found that It would take off in second (D position) and only give me 1st if I drooped the gears to low. I dropped the trans 3 weeks ago and found the exploded governor, bad reverse and intermediate clutch packs. I got the 87 4x4 trans and guts from 03 4r70w stang trans.

ALL THIS TIME WITH THE STOCK COUGAR CONVERTER, I have a feeling that I have a bad TQ, all that revving and overheating must have killed it.

Orilleys has a rebuilt one for 99 dllrs. I will wait till my back is back and drop the trans, go thru it again, and install a new TQ. wish me luck!
